Hello everyone and welcome to the official start of the Hollanov Big Bang ‘26!

This Big Bang will require authors to write a 20,000 word minimum completed fic, centred around Ilya Rosanov/Shane Hollander, who will be paired anonymously with a beta and an artist, with the intent to promote community and communication with people who may not have otherwise interacted!

To sign up, please fill out the form that applies to you at one of these links:

If you are signing up for more than one role (i.e. author and beta), please fill out both forms accordingly.

Once you’re all signed up, you’ll receive a welcome email with a link to our discord server within 48 hours!

If you have any questions, feel free to send through an ask and we will do our best to assist.

We look forward to creating with you!

I have a question: does the fanfic that is required to be finished even if it's from another fandom have to be in English, or can it be in another language?

hello :)

your previously published 12k+ fic can be in another language, that's totally okay. however your fic being written for the big bang does need to be in english

Hi, I’m a little confused about the schedule. The posted schedule says Artist Claiming is on May 24th, but under Rules, you have submissions for claims due on June 30th and claiming on July 7th. Additionally, Posting Begins on September 14th on the schedule graphic, but under FAQ it says posting will begin on October 1st. Can you please clarify the event dates – perhaps I am misunderstanding something about your process?

hi, thanks so much for pointing this out!

we made some changes to the schedule based on feedback about artist timelines but hadn't updated these dates in the rules and faq. these are all up to date now

Hello! Loving the project! Just wanted to clarify - you have a note about AI-usage will result in a ban. I'm likely to volunteer as a beta reader. Are beta readers allowed to use tools such as Grammarly basic to help with copyediting? In addition, is there a process for if we suspect AI usage by an author? Thanks!

hi, thanks for your questions :)

while we don't have any specific rules about using tools such as grammarly, we would expect that betas are reviewing, editing and providing feedback themselves rather than using tools for this – otherwise authors would just use the tools in the first place rather than engaging with betas

if there is proof that an author is using ai, we would ask that you reach out to the mods. but without proof we won't be making any accusations

hey mod team! first and foremost, i just want to say that the event looks absolutely FANTASTIC! i think all your rules & expectations make a lot of sense, and i am really looking forward to participating!

secondly, just a quick logistical question regarding the 12k fic authors must have already published: is it acceptable if this fic is under a different pseud on AO3 than the pseud that will be used for the big bang? i ask because i'm someone who's just a little bit neurotic about organising all my different fandoms, and i prefer to have a new pseud for a new fandom. for that reason, i don't have any over-12k fics under my heated rivalry pseud yet, but i have plenty under pseuds for other fandoms. is that fine for purposes of the big bang sign-up? (just to be clear, all my different pseuds are still linked under the same main username on AO3.)

thank you and happy new year!!

hi!!

thank you so much, that means a lot <3 we are so excited to be running it

that's totally fine, the 12k+ fic can be any fandom and different pseuds aren't an issue at all!

look forward to seeing your sign up come through!

Hi! I am very excited to discover this fest. Thank you for all the work in organising! I don't know if you can tell, but I'm super curious how many writers have signed up? 👀

hi, we've had approximately 40 writers sign up so far!

Can you explain more about how it works with the Betas? Is that mandatory? What if I don't like my assigned Betas edits or disagree with them?

Hi!

The beta's are mandatory for this fest, yes!

When you first get matched with a beta, it's important to discuss your expectations vs theirs. For me, this looks like confirming with the beta I am looking specifically for spelling and grammar (a minimum required for all fics), as well as pacing and plot holes. My personal writing style isn't for everyone, so I ask that beta's don't suggest edits regarding my plethora of commas or semi-colons unless it impedes the ability to read. A good beta should be able to meet you where you are at.

A beta's edits don't need to be adhered to, either. In the case of spelling and grammar, we do recommend to make those changes, but in the case of writing style or personal preference - if you don't agree with the edit, you can just move to the next one.

In an instance where you are unable to resolve a disagreement with your beta, or it's clear that your styles are not a match, we are happy to re-allocate to a more suitable pairing!

Thank you for pulling all this together! Can I ask why fics must be uploaded in their entirety, rather than the first chapter, first 20K words, etc? If I spend up to 9 months working on a large multichaptered project, I would want to upload it week by week, and as a reader, its easier to follow many fics with updates than to try to read multiple huge fics all at once

Hi!

Thank you for your ask, while we completely understand why some Big Bangs run in this way and why it would be the preference for some authors, it can cause several administrative issues.

  • There would be no surefire way for the mod team to confirm the fic was actually completed at the time of deadlines
  • This would result in likely multiple fics in the fest being posted/updated on the same day, instead of each fic and art combo getting their own day to shine
  • If the art is not in the first chapter or 20,000 words, there may be no guarantee of when the art will be posted. The artists will be working hard, and deserve their recognition when the fic is posted - as opposed to weeks or months later

Hi, i was wondering if there’s a closing date for artist apps? The selection/pairing up process is a little too far away for me to be 100% sure i can commit, but will it be a problem if i wait until like May or June to sign up? Thanks

hi :)

artist sign ups close may 22, so you can definitely wait until closer to that date before deciding, that's not a problem

hiya!

just found out about this fest and hoping to participate as a writer :)

my question is - do you allow co-writing? my friend and i would love to, as neither of us have written hollanov before and want to try our hand at it together.

Avatar

Hi!

Yes, co-writing a fic is completely fine! The only caveat is that authors may only sign up once, so if you are co-writing, you wouldn't be able to sign up a second time to write a solo fic.

If you are planning on co-authoring, please make sure you include both parties information in the sign up form or complete two separate forms and indicate that you're working together! :-)

Hello! I cannot commit to the writing at this time in my life. And I can beta, some, but work and life will keep me pretty busy.

Is there anything else you need?

I'm a fabulous cheerleader and encourager and supporter.

Love the idea of the big bang but want to be honest about what I can commit to. Thanks!

Hi!

Thank you for your interest in the fest!

We completely understand that life has to come first. Our sign ups are open for a couple months and if you think you may have more capacity to beta or write later on, we would love to have you!

A big thing we would love to encourage for all those who are unable to participate in the creative side is to make sure to leave a kudos and comment once we have started posting to let the team know that you liked the fic/art! (Of course, we suggest this with all fics - but with multiple long fics being posted consecutively, we have found sometimes people forget to pass on the love in the haste to get to the next fic.)

I've done bbs for years now along with running a couple of my own. So there are just a couple of questions I have.

  1. Does the mod team need help? 200+ sounds like it would be a lot for two people to handle. In some bangs I've been in (both as a participant and a mod), i've seen mod teams of 5 to 6 to help with participants and all different parts of the event.
  2. What bangs have you all ran? And were they in big fandoms? Small fandom big bangs are so much different than bigger ones in my experience.

Hi!

  1. We appreciate the concern! At this stage, we don't intend to increase the mod team. It is a lot of work, but having only two mods to begin with means expectations are set from the start about how much work will go into it, and we both acknowledge how much time we will need to put into running the fest. We do have a solid support network who will also be participating in the Big Bang, and should we need to increase or have someone monitor things in the server during a time both Em and I are offline, we have people who are able to step in as quasi-mods.
  2. The mod team have run the jegbigbang in 2024 and 2025 (which had 150 people sign up in 2024), topgunbigbang and caitvibigbang. The level of interest between the Jeg Big Bang 2024 and the Hollanov Big Bang are quite similar based on the initial poll that was created for both!

Anonymous asked:

If I want to beta read a fic for a friend who is an author in the bang, do I need to sign up as a beta as well? Thank you!

Hello!

Yes, for our record keeping we do require everyone to sign up. On both the beta and author form, there is a space to indicate if you are already working with someone and provide their name/tumblr so we can correlate it on our end :-)

Anonymous asked:

hi hi!!!! I was wondering if there will be specific prompts that will need to be claimed by an author, or will the authors be able to write whatever they want?

Hi!

No, there will be no specific prompts, authors are free to write whatever their heart desires!

Anonymous asked:

Hi! It looks like the beta signups are already closed?

Hi!

I'm not sure why that has shown up like that, the form is showing up clearly on our end!

Here's the link again, and we have relinked within the post in case there were any issues we couldn't see!

can the problem of artists with authors who don’t reach the final stages not be fixed with pinch hitters? i understand every big bang runs differently, but pinch hitters for both artists and writers are usually common, surely the scenario where they get reassigned means that you’re asking the artist to “trash” their first piece in the first place - couldn’t pinch hit writers step in and produce a fic for it?

Hi!

Personally, I have not seen Big Bangs with pinch hitters for writers, only artists.

We already have a very tight timeframe to write a completed 20,000 word minimum fic. While there are authors - myself included - who could write a 20,000 word fic in potentially only a couple of weeks should someone withdraw, that is a high expectation to put on someone who has already written a fic of that length or is possibly still in the stages of writing one.

You can also run into issues in the other direction. Personally, as a writer, if I were to have discussed my idea heavily with someone and then realised I was unable to complete the fic within the set timeframe, and the person I had discussed it with took the idea to someone else to write instead, I would be incredibly unhappy.

With our current timeline, there would never be a reason for someone to need to completely start over on their art.

This is something the mod team have discussed heavily since it was brought to our attention, and we have looked at it from every angle to see how we could change it, which is how artist timeline was changed initially. Unfortunately, there are pros and cons to bringing it earlier or having it later.

hey potential artist here only done a couple big bangs beore in smaller fandoms but in those i got paired with my author really early on, like almost right away and it was really nice to be invovled in the process the whole time getting to chat with them about the piece so i could get ideas stuff like that, can i ask the reasoning for having the artist claming and pairing so late? it'd be really nice ot be involved earlier int he process more like a collaboration

Hi!

Thank you for your question, while we understand why collaboration earlier on can be beneficial for some pairings, we have found that a not-insignificant number of authors who sign up initially, don't make it to the 70% or first draft stages.

In an instance where an artist is paired up with an author in these early stages, it would mean that they could've contributed a lot of work or even started on the art for a fic that would no longer be in the Big Bang and would mean they'd need to start from scratch during the later stages with an alternate author anyway. If there's isn't an artist who has withdrawn in the same timeframe, this can lead to inequity as an author may then be provided a second artist - or the artist could potentially not have an author to be paired with, limiting their ability to participate in the fest through no fault of their own.

The length of time between was brought to our attention and we have adjusted the schedule, however, we are unable to determine an alternate timeline that is fair to all those involved in the process.
