I have a serious interest in adult animation, the good, the bad and the awful, fell in love with Star Trek Lower Decks and due to the MASSIVE amount of references (and bc I watched one TNG episode in religion class when I was a wee lad + have known Jonathan Frakes from other shows) I decided to watch the entirety of Star Trek :)

I’m gonna be so fr guys, it’s been a struggle to post ANYTHING of mine, and even more so because I’ve been so stressed and out of it. But, I’m gonna try. These are concepts for characters I will be using in a fully-fledged comic series known as DESPONI (yes the capitalization is important). You’ll see a fair bit of them before the initial release, as well as some other characters, environmental studies, concept art, and a lot of unrelated pieces that are technically fanart.

I do really like the way that lower decks gets you attached to the california class ships as whole in a way that the other trek shows (largely) don't? (at least for me). Like, the classes of ship that are featured in the other shows - constitution class, galaxy class, defiant class, intrepid class, etc - my feeling of fondness for those classes of ships is just an extension of my fondness for *those particular ships.* But california class is given an identity and sense of community that makes you care about it beyond just the cerritos?

no but you can FORCE it away. use ublock origin and copy paste the blacklist i made into the filters to be able to remove the bullshit AI overview that google forces. it also removes youtube's forced ads (at least until they fix it)
you can also use the ublacklist extension and use this blacklist of AI image generation websites to curate your google image results
there are ALWAYS ways around stuff. it's just a matter of looking into it and asking around

Something I really love about Star Trek, especially Lower Decks, is the focus on California, my beloved state, but NOT! LOS ANGELES! In fact I’m not sure LA is ever really mentioned.

Cerritos to start like? Hello? Who OUTSIDE of Southern California, specifically like, the greater Long Beach/Lakewood/Buena Park area knows where the fuck Cerritos is?
Alhambra? Vallejo? West Covina?? Eureka???SoLVANG?? VACAVILLE???
Like I had a coworker once who was like “oh, I’m from a really small town in Northern California, you wouldn’t know it” so I was like well try me and she goes “Vacaville” and I’m like girl my old job’s office was based there lol but it IS really small and it shows that most people, even Cali natives, would not know this place, I was an exception because I’ve driven all over the state.
I just love the idea of star ships being inextricably linked to very specific places on Earth and those places having deep meaning for some of the beings working those ships like “this name keeps me directly linked to Earth while also being my work home and that brings me immense comfort”.
Like for me I’m SUPER bummed they don’t have- yet, or it simply was not mentioned- a USS Monterey. The “Whale Institute” was actually the Monterey Bay Aquarium, which would make that place name a fun reference to The Voyage Home, for one thing. But if I was an officer in the fleet, the Monterey could be the shittiest ship in the fleet and I would be like no, I’m assigned to the Monterey because then I’d never not be “home” the place name is that important to me as an Earthling.
