i think this new round of med students are supposed to serve as foils for javadi and whitaker. they're put there to highlight the ways dennis and victoria are specifically well-suited to emergency medicine but also might be the most negatively affected by it.

if you think about their major pitfalls on their first day, it makes a lot of sense. dennis not being able to accept losing his first patient to something he couldn't have prevented, and victoria passing out at a particularly gory moment directly contrasts with the two new students being very disconnected from their first death and seeming fine with the lung flip. this highlights the sensitivity whitaker and javadi came in with.

in season one, both seem like they'll crack under the pressure, but their sensitivity is actually what makes the job worth doing to them. like how frank told mel that they needed more people like her, ones that cared enough to be moved to tears.

this season seems to be smacking with themes of dissociation. robby is completely checked out, pushing off conversations that will never happen, accepting changes he hates because he doesn't have to deal with them, staring off into space while people talk to him. dana refers to herself as a horse who can mindlessly find her way back to the barn, she's cracking off-color jokes that don't seem very sensitive (more than the previous season), and she implies that she's back because she doesn't think anyone else can get them through the 4th of july, not because she actually wants to do the job anymore.

obviously you want to maintain that same softness and empathy you come in with, but is that reasonable after what they see? is it harmful to them as people to not completely dissociate the way we see some of the senior staff do? or is it more harmful to wall that negativity off?

i think this goes well with the other obvious theme of parenthood (donnie's a new dad, samira has mommy issues, the baby being abandoned). the ways being a parent simultaneously energizes and exhausts you. connects and isolates you. gives you purpose but ultimately limits what is perceived as acceptable. the ultimate question will be what does balance actually look like? a cruise? a sabbatical? getting laid?

“find balance if you can.” can you? is that even possible?

louie and langdon friendship means so much to me. two addicts in the hospital. one has no interest in recovery and the other doesn’t even want to admit he’s an addict. but now, ten months later, the one who wasn’t interested in recovery is maybe starting to think about it (even if it’s just in the back of his mind) because the one who didn’t even want to admit he’s had a problem opened up to him. i love this show so much oh my god

For all the fuss being made about the patient passports, how much do you wanna bet that's the thing that saves them a ton of time when the computers go down later in the season. I feel like we got so many Chekov moments in episode one that now I'm like. ok that's the list for the next 14 episodes 😭

I love the little ways they’re showing character growth. Javadi being used to Santos and actually engaging in a little banter instead of getting upset, Santos encouraging Mel (in her own way) to tell her what’s wrong, Whittaker having his own ducklings and teaching them stuff we watched him learn, Javadi standing up to her mother, Mohan still getting importing information from patients without listening to their whole life story. Oh god I missed them so much

I'm not gonna say much cus only ep 1 is out, but 1. I'm sorry. Patient passports have GOOD intentions I'm sure cus it would clear up to patients why they're waiting so long but... why are they these big folders? I think if it were a app or website that would be better. Like the doctors can input their stuff and the patients can see it on their end and 2. THAT BABY IS CUTE AS HECK OMG... SUCH A ROTUND LIL BABY I ACTUALLY LIT UP AT THE SIGHT OF HER, SO CUTE!!

Edit: it's come to my attention that these big paper folders will work when they go analog and my eyes have been opened. I was wrong. I see now. Still think they're too big but yes, these folders will save the day

Anyway I love Robby being bitchy and petty and unfairly hostile and I love Al-Hashimi completely bulldozing over him to the point of near disrespect I hope they almost kill each other by the end of the shift and then have a joint breakdown on the roof about it. Nothing but respect for MY presidents

I love how Dr. Al-Hashimi is being set up in the trailer. I think they are setting her up to be a foil for Robby while not necessarily having her be antagonistic to him. She's modern, he's old school; she's empathetic, he's jaded. Even just the way she looks with the carefully cared for hair and that oh so professional jacket contrasts with his presentation so much. I think they are going to have a plot line of learning from each other, specially with the system being shut down probably setting up a plot line of how you can't only rely on new systems, while Dr. Al-Hashimi teaches Robby how to manage being invested in your patients without loosing your way. I hope Robby does get his empathy back, and he learns that he can trust Dr. Al-Hashimi to hold down the fort while he goes looking for some much needed healing.

My prediction about the abandoned baby at the end of S2E1 as a medical student based on Dr. Al-Hashimi’s reaction:

She’s looking at the point of care CBC. That could show something like a blood cancer (leukemia) or immunodeficiency disorder, which may have prompted a parent to abandon the baby at an ER to start with.

Love when actual medical people predict stuff with reasoning I love hearing your thoughts
