so a very long time ago, my dad worked with an arson investigator

this guy was often one of the first people on the scene following a suspected arson, once emergency services had done what they needed to do. at times, there were also civilians on the periphery. often, they were freaking out, and understandably so; their home or workplace had just, quite literally, gone up in smoke

this investigator wouldn’t try to calm them down. he wouldn’t comfort them or be a shoulder to cry on.

instead, he’d walk up to the person most visibly losing their shit, hand them a fire extinguisher, and say “hey, can you keep an eye out for any other fires, and if you see one, can you put it out with this?”

of course, there was no actual risk of another fire. he wouldn’t be on the scene investigating if there was even a chance that the fire wasn’t completely put out. but the bystander didn’t need to know that

because that person, without fail, would immediately pull it together, take the fire extinguisher, and stand guard. they were, at least temporarily, calm enough for this investigator to do this job

my dad has told me the parable of the fire extinguisher a hundred times, and i think about it a lot. i think about what it says about people and crises. i think about what it says about the grounding power of having a purpose. and i think about the importance of letting someone help me through something, even if that help is just going to be another casserole to throw into the freezer, because useless or not, that fire extinguisher might be the only thing holding them together

High Potential 2.07: The One That Got Away Promo

  • What do you mean, this is the last episode leading up to the fall finale?? I genuinely hope that we don't have to wait a long period of time. I don't want to wait another 3 months for 2.08 to come out, especially if this episode ends in another cliffhanger.
  • Kaitlin Olson (Morgan) said that she filmed a makeout scene during her interview with Jimmy Kimmel a few weeks ago. And it looks like we're getting said makeout scene in this upcoming episode.
  • The gag of this makeout scene is that it's neither with Wagner nor Karadec, as the fandom theorized. But the question still remains of who the heck does Morgan end up making out with, and how did she get into that situation?
  • What I love about the fandom, especially the Morgadec shippers, is that all of us have the mutual feeling that we were hoping the makeout scene was with Karadec, but we're all glad that it's not with Wagner.
  • I'm curious if Karadec is chasing Morgan and whoever this mystery guy is that she ends up making out with during the car chase scene. Like, is this the episode where we finally see a protective AND jealous Karadec? I guess, we'll see.

Re: make out scene

I mean, it could also be one of those “what if” scenarios that Morgan always sees in her head but no one else is privy to (i.e. Karadec spilling coffee)

But also, get it girl. Karadec is a slow burn, end game. Nothing says you can’t have a little fun in the mean time.

*For the record, hot French guy is way more enjoyable to watch than EMT Tom.

Instead of saying “Hollis, let’s talk,” Gibbs does THIS. ⬆️😡

Hollis, you’re a soldier — you should’ve punched him. I would’ve, if he pulled that stunt on me.

By the way, look at Hollis’s face right before he pushes her toward the elevator — it looks like she’d already processed Ducky’s story about Shannon and Kelly and took Gibbs’s silence about them as a given. Doesn’t seem like she was planning to pry.

So why do some fans keep blaming her for “pushing where she wasn’t invited”?

I hate injustice!

And look at her face when he shoved her into the elevator. She looks like she’s not expecting anything good — there’s literally shock in her eyes. And him? With that “I don’t care” expression, staring at the ceiling.

Gibbs asked her, “You’re going to tell me? What’s bugging you.” (Man! He couldn’t even say, “Tell me what’s bothering you.” He practically came at her.)

She answered honestly.

What the hell do you want from her — lies? Tricks? She told the truth.

He shut the elevator down. He asked the question. She answered. Then he smirked silently and turned it back on — a clear sign he wasn’t planning to talk.

He was the one who started this talk, hello?!

He might feel uncomfortable with the conversation, but those silent flicks of the elevator were just plain disrespectful. You can’t expect a grown, self-sufficient, self-respecting person to just swallow that. That’s not how it works, Gibbs. She didn’t. She held her ground. That’s what makes her strong, and why fans blaming her for “pushing where she wasn’t invited” are missing the point.

If he hadn’t kicked off that little “demonstration” with the switch — fine. But he literally kept flicking it on and off — like he was mocking her.

Of course she flipped it back — she’s never backed down from him. That’s what he liked about her in the first place.

You’re dealing with a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army, man. You really didn’t expect her to just throw up her hands and go, “Oh, Jethro, you win,” did you? You knew from the very beginning who you were dealing with. From the very first meeting on the golf course.

And yet — the moment he made it clear that it hurt and he didn’t want to keep talking about Shannon and Kelly, she accepted it. She didn’t push.

Enough defending Gibbs, folks. He doesn’t communicate like a healthy person. And he tries to communicate that way with a healthy, mature, whole person — and guess what? He gets exactly what he asked for.

He asked the question, but he wasn’t ready to hear the answer. He wasn’t ready to take responsibility. That’s not okay, people. And yet we, the fandom, sit there cooing, “Oh, lonely wolf Gibbs, mwah mwah.” Arrr!

And in that same episode, Ducky tells Hollis, “You won't find a better man than Jethro.” Save me, help me, oh lord. 🙄🤦‍♀️

What about a good guy, a trauma surgeon, Ducky? How about Alden Parker? (Okay, Ducky, you don’t know Parker yet, fine.)

P.S. I still love Gibbs. But run, Hollis, run — Hawaii’s waiting for you, baby.

Good Lord, the fanfic I’ve written and devoted to just this sentiment is obscene.

And then years later, thinking she owes him the apology?

But do I still think she might have been able to make it work with him? Abso-fucking-lutely. I’ll die on that hill. I mean, they don’t call her The Gibbs Whisperer for nothing…

Being a writer is more about googling words to make sure they absolutely mean what you always assumed they meant than simply writing.

This is about the sexiness of The Golden Girls but I really feel the need to remind the world of how fucking progressive this show was.

In the episode 72 hours, we find out Rose may have contracted AIDs during an emergency gallbladder surgery.

Rose: Why me, Blanche? I'm tired of pretending I feel okay so you won't say, 'Take it easy', and I'm tired of you saying 'Take it easy' because you're afraid I'm going to fall apart. Dammit, why is this happening to me? I mean, this isn't supposed to happen to people like me. You must've gone to bed with hundreds of men. All I had was one innocent operation. Blanche: Hey, wait a minute! Are you saying this should be me and not you? Rose: No! No, I'm just saying that I am a good person. Hell, I'm a goody-two-shoes! Blanche: AIDS is not a bad person's disease, Rose, it is not God punishin' people for their sins!

In Isn't it romantic? we find out Dorothy's childhood best friend is a lesbian who recently lost her partner. She confesses she has feelings for Rose. Rose turns her down but makes it clear that she still wants to be friends even though she doesn't return those feelings.

Sophia: Jean is a nice person. She happens to like girls instead of guys. Some people like cats instead of dogs.
Jean: Rose, about last night. I should never have said anything. Rose: You only said what you were feeling. Jean: It's just that this last year has been so difficult for me. Pat was the person I planned to spend the rest of my life with. And when she died, I just felt so terribly alone. Empty. I thought I could never care for anyone again. Until I met you. I just got very confused. I hope I didn't make you uncomfortable. Rose: Well, I have to admit that I don't understand these kinds of feelings. But if I did understand, if I were, you know, like you, I'd be very flattered and proud that you thought of me that way.

Ebbtide's Revenge gives us Phil's funeral, and Sophia addressing him wearing women's clothes.

Rose: So what if he was different? It's okay that you loved him. Sophia: I did love him. He was my son, my little boy. But every time I saw him I wondered what I did, what I said, when was the day I did whatever I did to make him the way he was. Angela Petrillo: What he was Sophia, was a good man.

Sister of the Bride, where Blanche's brother Clayton brings his boyfriend to town, because they're planning on getting married.

Blanche: Oh, look, I can accept the fact that he's gay, but why does he have to slip a ring on this guy's finger so the whole world will know? Sophia: Why did you marry George? Blanche: We loved each other. We wanted to make a lifetime commitment. Wanted everybody to know. Sophia: That's what Doug and Clayton want, too. Everyone wants someone to grow old with. And shouldn't everyone have that chance?

There are so many episodes I could sit here and quote but this show is still so important. It isn't perfect, there are jokes that definitely don't land that I will not sit here and defend, but in the context of when it was created? This show is a fucking masterpiece and deserves respect for that.

After all that, and I never thought I'd say this, I am so damn grateful the mothership was too gutless to ever go there with tiva. We'd have got some PG snapshot wedged between other characters' storylines and the case of the week, and we'd never ever have had this.

Gutless?

Ohhhh…

you mean like Gibbs and Kate.

Or Gibbs and Jack.

I mean, at least Hollis saw some actual action?

(Bitter? Me? Surely, you jest 🙄)
