What would have happened if both mothers were willing to cut the baby in half
The essence of the wire and cloth mother is an experiment. They are made only to create an environment in which the monkey can be observed. Those experiments show us that connection, physical touch and comfort are essential for a child. They teach us that there is more to a mother than food. But the mothers are not real. They cannot offer the monkey more than an illusion as it grasps for anything resembling the warmth and love of a true mother. This illusion is not the type of love that can be rightfully fought over in court; in the end only the child will fight for it and only the child will be affected.
It is written in Psalm 131:2:
But I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child is my soul within me.
As David finds rest and quiet for his soul with God, he compares it to the comfort a mother can bring. There is much more to a mother than a soft skin and a place to cling onto. Not only will a child love its mother, but a mother will love her child. She will protect it and have compassion for the son of her womb (as written in Isaiah 49:15). There is only one mother who will do this for the monkey. Which is why the baby monkey will be returned to its birth mother. Only she can give it everything it is missing when even the two mothers that were created as mere instruments have rejected it.
tldr; the real mom, next question
