From Private Railway to National Line – The Birth of the Koumi Line

The JR Koumi Line connects Komoro City in Nagano with Kobuchizawa Station in Yamanashi Prefecture, running through stunning highland scenery including Mount Yatsugatake and Nobeyama. It is widely known as a scenic “highland railway” and remains a beloved route for tourists and locals alike.

Before becoming the Koumi Line, the railway started as the Saku Railway, a private railway line operating between Komoro and Nakagomi. It was built with the financial backing of wealthy local landowners and bankers who recognized the economic need for better transportation in the Saku area. With the opening of the railway, the area around Nakagomi Station quickly developed, with inns, stores, and a new town forming around the station.

By 1919, the line had been extended to Koumi Station, and there were even ambitious plans to extend the railway further, connecting Shizuoka and Niigata Prefectures via a trans-Japan railway. Unfortunately, this grand vision was never realized.

長野県佐久市にある成知公園は、一見すると普通の地域公園ですが、実は歴史的に重要な場所でもあります。この静かな公園には、地域の交通を支えた佐久鉄道とJR小海線の歴史が息づいており、当時の車両展示などから、その時代の雰囲気を感じることができます。

私鉄から国鉄へ、小海線の誕生と発展

JR小海線は、長野県の小諸市と山梨県の小淵沢駅を結び、八ヶ岳や野辺山などの美しい高原風景の中を走る路線です。その景観の美しさから、「高原鉄道」として多くの人に親しまれています。

この小海線の前身が、佐久鉄道です。もともと小諸〜中込間を走る私鉄として開業したこの路線は、地域の経済発展を願った資産家や銀行家たちの支援によって誕生しました。鉄道の開通により、中込駅周辺には旅館や商店が立ち並び、新たな町が形成されていきました。

It’s been two weeks since our last blog post, and our kittens have already grown so much in that short time! Their eyes are wide open now, they’ve started wobbling around on their tiny feet, and they love to play with each other. Watching them is nothing short of heartwarming.

Mama cat Kuru has been doing an incredible job caring for her kittens. Though it’s her first time as a mother, she’s handling everything like a pro—nursing, grooming, and keeping them clean. Her strong maternal instincts are truly inspiring to watch.

From now on, we’ll continue to share updates on the kittens’ growth through this blog. If you’re interested in cat parenting or just love following kitten development, we hope our posts will be both enjoyable and helpful.

【佐久市の名所】季節ごとに変わる「ぴんころ地蔵」～5月は鯉のぼり、6月は傘の装飾で彩られる参道～

I previously introduced the "Pinkoro Jizo" in Saku City, Nagano Prefecture, on my blog.

This landmark is especially striking at night with its beautiful illumination. On my recent visit, I noticed that the decorations along the path had changed from the koinobori (carp streamers) in May to umbrella decorations in June.

With the arrival of June and the rainy season in mind, many colorful umbrella decorations now adorn the path leading to the shrine. The illumination creates a magical and mysterious atmosphere. The sight of the umbrellas lit up at night is very elegant and enchanting — I found myself stopping to admire the beautiful scene.

It seems that the decorations change with the seasons. I look forward to visiting again to enjoy the seasonal changes in the Pinkoro Jizo path decorations.

以前のブログでご紹介した長野県佐久市の「ぴんころ地蔵」。 夜のライトアップが美しく印象的な名所ですが、再訪した際に、5月の鯉のぼりから6月には傘の装飾に変わっていることに気づきました。

6月に入り、梅雨を意識してか、参道にはたくさんの傘の装飾が飾られ、ライトアップによって幻想的で神秘的な雰囲気に包まれていました。 夜の傘の装飾の景色はとても風情があり、思わず立ち止まって見入ってしまうほど素敵な光景でした。

どうやら季節に応じて装いを変えているようです。 これからも季節ごとに変わるぴんころ地蔵の参道の装飾を楽しみに、折にふれて足を運びたいと思います。

Newborn Kittens from Kuru – 1 Week Update 【子猫の成長記録】クルちゃんが赤ちゃんを出産！生後1週間の様子

Kuru, our beloved cat, recently gave birth to four tiny kittens. Sadly, one of them passed away shortly after birth. Now, at just one week old, the remaining three kittens are growing well.

Their eyes are still closed, but they’re drinking milk strongly and being lovingly cared for by their mother, Kuru. We’re touched by their determination and look forward to sharing more updates as they grow.

Hanazura Inari Shrine: A Stunning Shrine on the Cliffside 鼻顔稲荷神社：断崖に立つ絶景の稲荷神社

Hanazura Inari Shrine in Saku City, Nagano Prefecture, is famous for its brilliant red shrine building perched on the cliffs of the Yukawa River. 外はカリカリ、中はジューシーな「かわ」が最高

焼き鳥メニューはどれも絶品ですが、個人的におすすめなのは「かわ」！　注文すると、外はパリッと香ばしく、中はジューシーに焼き上げられた一串が登場。しかも、仕上げには特製の甘辛だれがしっかりと絡んで、もう最高のひとこと。

Mt. Asama, located in eastern Nagano Prefecture, is an active volcano that continues to captivate all who see it. Its commanding presence represents both the beauty and raw power of Japan’s natural landscape.

No matter the season, Mt. Asama always leaves a strong impression. I’ve captured its image from Komoro, Miyota, saku,and Karuizawa. Though it is the same mountain, each location reveals a unique “face.” I hope you enjoy discovering these different aspects through the photos.

A Heartwarming Scene: Stray Cats Peacefully Sharing a Meal in Friendship 仲良く餌を食べる奇跡｜心癒される猫たちの友情

Today, I witnessed a truly heartwarming moment. I saw two stray cats in a parking lot and decided to offer them some cat food I happened to have with me. To my delight, the two cats sat side by side and began eating quietly together. They had always seemed to roam separately before, so I was surprised to see them so calm and friendly, as if they had been longtime companions. This scene reminded me that even stray cats can form bonds of trust and friendship. Like humans, cats have feelings and emotional depth. Moments like these, though small, bring gentle warmth to our everyday lives.

今日はとても心温まる光景に出会いました。駐車場にいた2匹の野良猫に、たまたま手元にあった猫用の餌をあげたところ、2匹は仲良く並んで静かに餌を食べ始めたのです。 これまで別々に行動していた子たちだったので、争うこともなく、まるで長い付き合いの友達のように寄り添っている姿に驚き、そしてとても癒されました。 野良猫にも信頼関係や友情のようなものがあるのだなと、改めて感じました。人間と同じように、猫たちにも感情や心があるのですね。 こうしたささやかな出来事が、一日を優しく彩ってくれます。
