occasionally I see posts about how Martin is 'mean' or 'unfair' or 'annoying' to Jon throughout s5, and while, number one, I don't think he is (he's A Guy in a new relationship making bad decisions because they're IN THE APOCALYSE AND HE'S DATING THE ANTICHRIST)- I also think it's important to acknowledge that Martin's role for almost all of s5 is, in fact, being an audience surrogate! We've been operating under what is essentially "the real world with spooky DLC" for four straight seasons and being gradually introduced to How The Fears Work alongside Jon, and suddenly we have a fearscape with entirely new and different rules! And because Jon seems to just innately Know how the whole thing works and we get cut off from most of his internality, it means someone else has to ask the questions the audience needs. including all the ones that push about it! Martin is asking a bunch of questions throughout s5 and not letting Jon wiggle out of talking about it, because the audience needs him to press for topics Jon really doesn't want to talk about. Jon knows there's nothing he can do, for example, about the kids on Night Street- but Martin doesn't, and we don't! and if the audience doesn't get the bad ends to all those questions (can't you kill the guy in charge of the domain? can't you just free the kids? can't you make it better for them? what about if you turn everyone into an avatar? why don't you just mercy-kill everyone?) then people start yelling "JUST CEASELESS WATCHER EVERYONE", or being upset about character decisions, which is much more annoying to me tbh. martin's gotta be sure there's nothing they can do, and so does the audience
