From Pinar Yolaçan’s (Turkish, b. 1981, @pinaryolacan) Maria series. Her 2007 photographs focus on Afro-Brazilian women in garments crafted by Pinar from local fabrics, inspired by the architecture of Salvador de Bahía and designed after the Portuguese colonial Baroque era. Each model is embellished with animal placenta acquired from São Joaquim market in Salvador. The conflation of garment and body points to perishability, as the series of matrons dismembers the category of colonialism, of power and submission, and of empire and indigeneity.
