Tolkientober on AO3

Now that I've finished Tolkientober, I'll be posting all my ficlets in one place on AO3. My goal is to post one per day.

Like Falling Leaves (394 words) by lilyhandmaiden Chapters: 1/31 Fandom: The Lord of the Rings - All Media Types, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (TV 2022), The Lord of the Rings - J. R. R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings (Jackson Movies), The Silmarillion and other histories of Middle-Earth - J. R. R. Tolkien Rating: General Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Finrod Felagund & Galadriel Characters: Galadriel (Tolkien), Finrod Felagund Additional Tags: Tolkientober, Tolkientober 2025, Additional Tags to Be Added Summary: "It was not a new Valinor, this Middle Earth. It was not a gift. But it was hers. After all she had lost, all she had sacrificed, this land was hers because she had earned it." Semi-chronological glimpses into the life of Galadriel for Tolkientober 2025.

I kind of lo e the various depictions of Noah's ark in manuscripts.

You've got your classic boats

Your Viking-style longships

Your... houses?

Your... baskets?

Your... whatever this is.

“It [The Lord of the Rings] is finished, if still partly unrevised, and is, I suppose, in a condition which a reader could read, if he did not wilt at the sight of it…now I look at it, the magnitude of the disaster is apparent to me. My work has escaped from my control, and I have produced a monster: an immensely long, complex, rather bitter, and very terrifying romance, quite unfit for children (if fit for anybody); and it is not really a sequel to The Hobbit, but to The Silmarillion.”

— J.R.R. Tolkien to Sir Stanley Unwin, 24 February 1950. Reprinted in The Fall of Gondolin (via thebookwormunderground)

What writer hasn’t finished their first draft and thought, “the magnitude of the disaster is apparent to me”?

Occasionally you do need to just let fantasy be fantasy. "Why are the mountains around Mordor in a square, mountain ranges don't work like that" well you see there's an evil god who lives there hope this helps

we’ve gone from the yee haw agenda to the ye olde thot programme

Ah yes, those slutty slutty Landsknecht shorts:

The bare-legged / hot-pants look was fairly common, since the whole point about being a Landsknecht (or Reislaufer, their Swiss equivalent) was to look outrageous.

Most period illustrations of Landsknechts are black-and-white woodcuts…

…though in 1905 a book called „Geschichte des Kostüms“ - History of Costume - assembled a bunch of black-and-whites and added colour.

If they look excessively gaudy, they’re not, because these next prints were coloured in-period by an artist called Erhard Schön, and it’s fair to assume he was representing what he saw.

In short - or in shorts - those reenactor costumes are spot on. :->

Something mentioned nowhere in this post that I have just learned from googling: these guys were not Ye Olde Medieval Dandies. They were 15th-16th century mercenaries. Pretty hardcore, too. They were exempt from sumptuary laws (ie the rules that said you couldn’t wear certain colours or cloth or styles) and apparently their response to that was technicolour thotpants.

I was complaining earlier about costuming in both “historical” settings and in fantasy/scifi. This is exactly what I mean when I say a knowledge of actual history would enrich the conceptual creative palette for things like “hardcore mercenary outfits.”

TROP Reforged— Sand

[nori x poppy, pre-relationship, rated T]

for @lilyhandmaiden who requested a bath :)

Nori is tired to her very bones, tired in a way that surprises her after years of Harfoot migration. The desert had caught her unprepared and unawares. She thought she knew what she was getting herself into when she set off with her Stranger, but the hunger and the thirst that set in after days of wandering through the barren, dusty landscape was awful.

She’s worried for her Stranger, but she’s also grateful for the chance to rest. The Stoors’ homes are cool, carved into the cliffside to provide shelter from the sun. The rock retains the nighttime chill. And they have water, bless everything.

She glances over at Poppy, who is making eyes at that Nobody fellow. Nori winces. She goes to stand on weary legs, but Poppy stops her.

“Where’re ya goin’?” Poppy asks. “We’ve got to stick together.”

Nori rolls her eyes. “I need to wash,” she grumbles. “I’ve got sand in places sand’s got no business bein’.” It’s true. That whirlwind her Stranger kicked up blew dust and dirt into every crevice imaginable. Nori isnt sure what kind of bath she’ll be able to get in this place, but even a little rinse would do her a world of good.

“I’ll come with you!” Poppy exclaims, scrambling up to follow Nori. Nori tenses.

“I’m fine, Poppy, I’m just goin’ t’get cleaned up a bit. You stay here with your… friend.” Nori looks pointedly at Nobody. She’s not trying to be rude, exactly, but she can't bring herself to fully trust this stranger. Something uncomfortable twists inside her whenever she sees Poppy giggling at him.

Poppy frowns. “I need a wash too.”

“Ugh, fine. Let’s go.”

***

The wooden tub sloshes with warm water. Nori stands at the side, eyeing the size of the tub. It’s much smaller than the wide open streams she’s used to bathing in.

She backs away. “We’ll take turns,” Nori says decisively.

Poppy snorts. “Water’ll get cold,” she says, already slipping the straps of her dress off her shoulders.

Nori swallows thickly. “That’s fine,” she says in a rush. “It’ll feel nice when it’s a bit cooler! You go, I’ll just… wait outside.”

“Nori Brandyfoot, you’re actin’ mighty strange,” Poppy growls. She puts her hands on her hips. Her shoulders are bare, skin soft-looking.

“No, ‘m not,” Nori says. It’s a little desperate.

“Just get in the tub!”

“Don’t you think we’re a little old t’ be bathin’ together?” Nori tries.

“Give it a rest!” Poppy snaps. “We’ve been friends for how long? It’s not a big deal.”

Nori grimaces. Not a big deal for Poppy, maybe. For Nori, there’s no chance she gets through this without her face on fire and those kinds of dreams for months.

She looks down at the ground while Poppy slides her dress the rest of the way off. It hits the ground with a soft whoosh. Nori exhales shakily. She listens to the soft splashing as Poppy clambers into the tub and groans.

“Nori, it feels wonderful to soak your sore muscles in the heat. C’mon, get in! Even Harfoots weren’t meant for this much hikin’ and no rest!”

Nori glances up and immediately away. Poppy is sunk down, water up to her neck, but the sight still feels indecent.

Facing firmly away from the tub, Nori strips quickly and efficiently. Her heart flutters in her chest. She jumps quickly into the tub, sending water sloshing out and over the sides.

“Watch it!” Poppy exclaims.

Nori meets her eyes, laughing nervously. Poppy has the warmest, kindest hazel eyes and a soft face. Everything about her is cozy and welcoming. It makes Nori want to melt into the water and disappear.

The tub is far too small to be comfortable for two. Every time Nori feels the brush of Poppy’s foot against hers, or the way Poppy’s arm slides past her shoulder to grab the soap, she feels as though her chest may explode. She’s sure she’s never felt so tense in her life.

The water does its job of removing the concerningly large quantities of dirt and sand from her skin. Soap bubbles begin to crowd the surface and provide her with some measure of privacy and comfort. Poppy scrubs at her nails, seemingly unaware of Nori’s inward conflict.

Eventually, the dust is gone and the water cools. Nori lingers in the bath and breathes a sigh of relief when Poppy is dried and dressed.

This is fine. These… feelings… are fine. They’re going to be just fine.

TRoP Reforged 3 & 4

My responses to the Rings of Power Reforged prompts for season 1 episodes 3 and 4 are up on AO3! (Yes, I am very behind, but I'm working on catching up.)

"Largo Brandyfoot had a sunshiney personality, everyone said."

"When Elendil’s wife died, he was lost—rudderless amidst the dark, bottomless sea that had taken her away from him."

"Adar remembered the first sunrise."

"Part of Míriel wished her father could have been aware of the Elf in his bedchamber."

"When Elrond had first mentioned, in an offhand way, that his father had been turned into a star, Durin had said, 'Pull the other one, Elf, it’s got bells on.'"

"For most of his life, Waldreg had no enemies in Tirharad."

Extremely excellent, very very very autistic quote from Brennan Lee Mulligan:

"Curiosity is love for the world, and when you love something, you want to get to know it more. So when you share facts about crows or pterodactyls or whatever, what you are expressing is gratitude for the ability to exist in and come to understand the beauty of the world around you."

"When you tell someone that you don't like all the crow facts, you're...

"You're actually saying that you hate me. I am my crow facts."

i was so sad, i drew a little bat so i wouldn’t be sad. and now i am no longer sad.

here is a little bat to banish your sadness

This nice little bat reminds me of this other nice little bat who was drawn in the 1200s:

This is the only website where I routinely see people say things like “oh this reminds me of something I recently saw from the 1200s”
