Lynn Beck's Gaming Oubliette

@lynnbecks-gaming-sideblog / lynnbecks-gaming-sideblog.tumblr.com

A blog for talking about games, posting screenshots and clips, stuff like that. Formerly @wjbminecraft and @lynnbeck-smithingtable.
Send me asks about random games!
Note: the games in my header image are mostly just random ones from my Steam library, so there's a chance I haven't played them yet, haven't for a while, or don't intend to. Feel free to ask.

Welcome to the oubliette! Again!

Hi! I'm Lynn. Welcome to my gaming sideblog!

This blog is where I post about games I like. And also some I don't like! It used to be a Minecraft blog, but I lost interest for a few months. However, I have brought it back as @lynnbeck-smithingtable, which is currently active at time of writing!

I'm not going to bother with DNIs, not because I'm against them or whatever but because. They should be obvious, plus I reblog non-gaming things here that will drive away anyone who I don't want here. Rent-lowering gunshots and all that.

If you want to know if I've played a game, or just like. Anything about my opinion on a game, whether it's one I've mentioned or not, send an ask!

Also if a game I talk about sounds interesting, I recommend looking into playing it. Who knows, you might find a new favourite...

A list of games I've done liveposts and other in-depth stuff about is below.

This is tangentially connected to that last post but I have two computers (a full-size desktop in my room that I use for games and art and stuff, and a decently-powerful mini-PC connected to the TV in the lounge/living-room that I use for emulation and VR), and I'm kinda considering getting like. OBS (or any other screen-recording software; feel free to suggest any that's, like, better, bearing in mind that I don't want it for streaming or anything, just recording) on the latter so I can like. Get decent recordings of games I'm emulating if they have interesting aesthetics or whatever.

Ok so I haven't played Super Mario Strikers or the sequels, nor do I particularly want to (my appreciation for the Mario franchise is unfortunately muted by my severe dislike of football and also sports in general) but I will say that I do kinda love the aesthetics of the different pitches/stadiums/whatever? Especially the more sci-fi ones:

It honestly kinda sucks that the Mario wiki's images of them are largely so low-resolution/quality, like as I already stated I don't particularly want to play it, but maybe I should so I can get some better images...

I haven’t been on this app in a while, but I know a Black man, Keith Porter, was murdered by ICE on New Year’s Eve (Rest in Power) in Cali. Just one of the countless Black people who’ve been murdered by ICE and other agents of the state.

I log back into this app and see the conversations around the white woman, Renee Good, who was just recently killed. And I can’t help but notice the stark difference in circulation of news and boosting of stories between both of them across this app…

Shit has BEEN happening to Black people across administrations and is currently happening to Black people under this administration, and is met by crickets. Yet when it starts touching white people, I see real anger start being felt from the gen pop followed by amplification and co-opting of Black terms and memorialization… I stg it takes everything in me to give af about yall.

**Edited: linking a gfm for Keith

***update: the gfm is unavailable. Will post an updated link as soon as I have one (removing the link until then for less confusion)

*** updated gfm link verified by Keith Porter Jr’s grandfather

Ok but the stylistic differences between Quake II and 4 remind me of like. The difference between a live-action sci-fi thing from the 20th century, and its modern reboot.

Like it's not just the base aesthetics but also how enemies and stuff are designed. Like continuing the metaphor(?), Quake II's enemies feel like they could be actors in costumes, with things like the Flyers and Technicians being done with simple practical effects. Meanwhile Quake IV would be 90% 2000s CGI. A good example is comparing the Makrons' designs in both games:

Like I can vividly imagine the Quake II design (left) as a stop-motion puppet or animatronic prop, while the Quake 4 version (right) would 100% be mocapped CGI yes I am aware that's kinda redundant because it's already a 3D model but again, metaphor.

disco elysium being free on epic games today is evil as fuck. i beg of you guys just pirate it, the amount of claims on the free game will still tell the assholes who stole the game from the devs that Oh We're Still Relevant :). just pirate it. my christmas gift to you! pirate disco elysium

my fucking christmas gift to you (links to an internet archive listing)

GO GET THE GAME! Even if you don't want to play it. Just have it so you can play it later. It's SO GOOD.

It's not piracy in the the usual sense. Key members of the development team put it out for free when they were forced out of their own company after the game saw such extreme success.

The company offering it for free now is a direct slap in the face to the people who actually made it.

GO GET IT FOR FREE FROM THE ARCHIVE.

The fun thing about Quake III's singleplayer is that unlike, say, Smash Bros., you can have two of the same character with the same skin in a match together, which can be. Kinda silly sometimes. Case in point;

Though considering Orbb's premise is that it's meant to be one of many ambulatory biomechanical camera things created by the beings that run the arena or whatever, I guess this is one of the less out-there examples...

Aughhhh found a like. Decent (maybe?) SSD but I don't know if I should get it or wait until I have more money. Because it's £100 and that's like half of what I have. But then I can get back to playing Control and GMod and other games that I don't currently have installed because they're Too Big™ but wish I did...

Anonymous asked:

I don't go here. I just think Heavy and Medic should kiss a lot, so what's the difference between red and blue, and what is oktoberfest in this context? Also, is there someplace to watch the lore??? Is there lore???? I can't play fps games to save my life, but I want the lore if... if it exists....

OHHH I'll gladly answer all of this!!!

1- There is not many concrete differences between blu and red outside of being employed by a different Mann brother (RED are Redmon's and BLU are Blutarch's employees), in game, you can be in either team, with red being defense and blu offense most of the time (capture points, payload, etc)

2- The name Red Oktoberfest comes from one of Heavy's achievements, where he gets a domination for his Medic.

3- There's multiple places where to get the lore as the game doesn't really focus on it at all (outside of background assets), you can it form Meet the Team videos (Meet the Medic being where you see most of heavymedic's dynamic), Expiration date, End of the line (semi canon short of them being gay again) and the official comics, damn, I will even recommend readint the wiki itself! They do a great job at getting bits of information you could have missed otherwise if you weren't there to see it (like the in-character blogs) Overall yes! There's a lot of lore to be know about this game, you'll have to scavenge here and there for some bits yourself, but thankfully most of it is easily accesible, be it heavymedic focused or tf2 in general, i could talk about this for hours

Ok but shout-out to people who make like. Sourceports that make old games more accessible (and in some cases also allow for more complex modding capabilities), and wrappers that allow older games to run in widescreen or with antialiasing or whatever, and guides that explain the specific line in a game's .cfg file that you can change to make it match your monitor's aspect ratio.

Edit: also emulators can't forget emulators
