by the way. eating disorders are not just "i want to be skinny so i can be hot". that can be a trigger for those with vulnerable psychology to start the behaviours that may lead to a disorder, but anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, EDNOS and orthorexia nervosa are not just "stupid shallow teen girl diet diseases".

binge eating disorder, bulimia, and EDNOS are not even necessarily restrictive at all. the throughline of eating disorders is a debilitating, obsessive-compulsive set of behaviours surrounding food intake. i am really tired of people talking about eating disorders as if they are just diets and as if they can be solved with platitudes like "you're beautiful". had you said such things to me when i was bulimic i would have bitten your face off, i would have found it so insulting and reductive. these are serious mental illnesses that need targeted treatment, support and care to recover from, and each eating disorder is its own beast. i know you mean well when you tell disordered women they are beautiful, but i have never met a woman with an ED who appreciated such comments. most of us found them either insulting or actively triggering.

it may help you to conceptualize eating disorders as a particularly destructive offshoot of obsessive compulsive disorder. if someone is driven to wash their hands until they bleed, telling them their hands are already clean is not going to sound very helpful to that person, as the hand washing is only the behavioural compulsion. it doesn't do anything about the fact that their brain shrieks at them that their entire family will die of the black plague if they dont wash their hands exactly 33 times every time they feel contaminated. which is the actual root of their issue. it is a brain problem. if you only see the behavioural symptoms, you're failing to grasp the seriousness of the issue. please stop talking about eating disorders as if they are diets and as if disordered women are just shallow body obsessed fools who are unaware of the havoc their illness is wreaking on their body. if they have had an ED for any significant amount of time, most know, and many want to stop and be healthy again.
