A Small Promise
---
The sun was shining brightly when Mobius unlocked his front door after a week and a half away. He’d left his windows open a crack in hope of keeping the stale air out, and it seemed to have worked in his favor, as the cottage smelled crisp with just a hint of petrichor, though thankfully nothing looked wet.
Perched on his mantel was Loki.
“I’d ask how long you’ve been waiting, but since we’re only doing yes or no answers, we’d probably be here a bit while I tried to guess,” Mobius said with a bemused smirk.
Loki ruffled his feathers, but didn’t make a sound.
You ever see something innocuous, minding its own business on the clearance shelf at Michael’s and before you know it, it takes over your life for a few weeks?
So it was with this desktop greenhouse.
I took it home and after taking an appropriate time to “season” my idea in my mind (read: a month or two) I set to make my vision of a mini botanical garden a reality.
I started by removing the heavy glass panels and building a raised floor above the latch. I wanted to use the base as a foundation on the building.
I wrapped the foundation in plastic stone textured flooring (meant for Christmas villages) and built a pond at one end of the same. I then gave it a more realistic paint job and designed a rough layout for my plants and displays.
I also knew I wanted to make the ironwork significantly more intricate, but I wasn’t sure how just yet…
Up next - PLANTS! I went wild making all kinds of plants. Some were specific species and some were more conceptual.
I made several trees with polymer clay and moss, cacti out of beads and flocking, cattails out of raffia, hot glue and coffee grounds, and giant monstera leaves out of paper and wire.
This part should have taken me a long time, but it really came together fast. I loved finding ways to replicate natural shapes and patterns using bits of this and that.
I did make adjustments to my plans as I went like eliminating benches in favor of a simpler overall design.
Then I needed to fill my pond with water. For this I used resin. Lily pads were added to the top layer, and I wired in simple LED fairy lights. The batteries are kept in the box under the foundation.
In a weekend frenzy I added more plants, metal (paper) steps, new (plexi)glass windows, a roof, wrought-iron vines (paper again), doors that open, and a hose reel disguising the latch. Suddenly, a project I thought would take months was finished…
I love my desktop botanical garden. Right now it sits on a simple lazy Susan in my office. But I’d love to get it a proper display box to protect from dust.
Thank you for coming on this little journey with me. This piece packs a lot of joy into a tiny space. I always love building miniatures, and I’ll be doing more in the future I’m sure.
Letting Go
----
Mobius made his way through the dining room of the restaurant he was given the address of, the atmosphere reminding him of the banquet halls of Old Asgard. It was absolutely meant to be more for the tourists than the locals, which is why he was partly surprised to find out that this was where he was meant to meet Val and Love for dinner.
But there was a private room in the back, which is likely why Val had chosen it. A neutral meeting spot where they could still avoid being overheard.
“He’s here,” He heard Love say as he approached the doorway. He pushed the curtain aside and smiled as Love beamed up at him.
“Right as usual,” Val said with a grin for Love before turning to Mobius with a more serious but no less welcoming smile. “Mobius.”
“Your majesty,” He said with a half-bow. “I’m sorry I didn’t say anything earlier. My knowledge of you is, frankly, a lot less than some.”

What Stays
New Asgard broke Mobius’s heart in the best ways.
It was so full of life and resilience. He’d seen Ragnarok numerous times while studying Loki’s life, but he’d never gotten to see what came after.
He’d snapped a lot of pictures, taken more than a few videos. He was in good company; most of the tourists were doing the same, though perhaps gawking at the Asgardian technology more than Mobius was.
Feeling eyes on him, Mobius looked around, half expecting to see Rachel from the plane. Instead, he noted a magpie perched on a brass statue of the royal family. The statue itself wasn’t very big and was on a pedestal to elevate it just a bit over the heads of most beings. The magpie was on the base between Loki and Queen Frigga.
Mobius turned and made his way over to it, a grin growing as the bird didn’t flinch a bit at his approach.
A Clean Page
----
Classes were finished, Mobius had no other obligations for keeping him in town, and he was growing more and more restless and unsettled by the day. He had already handed off a lot of his volunteer hours to the kids who would need or want them, and so there was nothing to keep his mind from wandering to Loki, Sylvie, and everyone else fighting a battle he knew very little about.
The way Mobius saw it, he had three options.
everyone who menstruates should get 5000 dollars per period just for living through it i think
The endo girlies get the period payment equivalent of hazard pay or maybe a shift differential.
Soft Boundaries
---
Mobius pulled into his driveway mid-afternoon, feeling - if not better - than less like he might fall apart. Not that he was on the brink like he had been when Loki left before, but he had a gut feeling that if he had let himself stew alone any longer than he had, his seams would start splitting.
He grabbed his bags of groceries off the passenger seat, then headed inside the cottage with a slight spring in his step. The rain had either stopped or he was far enough away from town that the rain clouds weren’t over this particular area, so he was already thinking of maybe spending some more time on his deck, so long as his furniture wasn’t too moist.
He popped in, put things where they belonged, and got to work on making himself a coffee. Decaf, this go. He wasn’t at the TVA anymore, and just because he wasn’t going to die of any kind of health issues, that didn’t mean he shouldn’t potentially cut back on stimulants he no longer needed in excess.
As the coffee was almost done, there was a knock on the door.
Honestly, he expected this yesterday and was actually surprised Nate had left him alone for as long as he had.
WIP Wednesday

Mobius turned and made his way over to it, grin growing as the bird didn’t flinch a bit at his approach. “Hi,” He said softly, not resisting the urge to stroke a finger down its head. It preened and leaned into. “It’s really pretty here, I think you would have tolerated it.” The magpie gently nipped Mobius’s finger before soothing it with its beak, and Mobius chuckled softly at it. “So, does this mean things are done? Tap twice for yes, once for no. And if I’m crazy and you’re just a regular bird, fly off or something.” The magpie fluttered it’s wings as if to take off, but then tapped Mobius’s hand twice. “Everyone safe?” It hesitated, then tapped once. Mobius’s heart clenched. “One of ours, or…?” One tap. Mobius nodded. “What about you? You’re here like this, does that mean… are you…?” Three nips. Yes, and no. “Sorry,” he said, stroking the bird’s head again. It leaned into it again, then stilled and turned away, eyes sharply focused on something else.

Relearning Something Familiar
----
Much like the first time Loki left, he didn’t really give Mobius a real goodbye.
“So many of the gathered are fighting for someone they love, others are doing it for more altruistic reasons,” Loki had said as Mobius watched him summon magic to open a portal back to the TVA, no tempad required.
“Altruism isn’t a bad thing, Loki.” Mobius had told him with a grin.
Loki had looked at his feet, then met Mobius’s eye briefly.
“It’s not why I’m doing it,” He had replied before leaving through the portal and leaving Mobius alone in his house to face the silence without him.
It was, in Mobius’s opinion, right up there with “for you, for all of us,” as far as parting words go. Not a real goodbye, no saying when or if he’d ever be back. Just a somewhat vague statement, and off he went.
Mobius had spent the day that followed in a haze of being tired while trying to make sure he remembered every minute of his night with Loki so it would be burned forever in his memory. By that night, grief came back.
After living with the grief of losing Loki for years, Mobius thought he knew what to expect.
I honestly think Gen-Z and younger simply does not understand how recent widespread smartphone adoption is.
I am not that old, and I didn't have a smartphone until probably late high school. For most of my life, many if not most people were not walking around with a magic internet machine in their pocket that they pulled out and used constantly for everything.
reblog if you remember having to ration your text messages and accidentally opening the internet on your phone was the end of the world
A Moment After the Noise
----
Mobius’s cottage was too quiet. He’d known bringing Loki inside would create new ghosts, and yet he couldn’t help but do it anyway. Now, the silence held the emptiness his departure had left, heavy and all-consuming, surrounding Mobius and making it impossible to tune out without something to distract his mind.
They had spent the whole night simply being. Loki hadn’t lied when he said he was a voyeur in Mobius’s life. He knew where everything was, he knew nearly all of the things Mobius watched, and he even asked him about some of the things Mobius had tried around town - the pastries, the coffees, the local dishes. They talked about everything and nothing - Mobius’s other friends, their mutual ones at the TVA, what they were watching, the migration - or lack thereof - of the seabirds. Would Mobius eventually build a little dock and buy a jetski? Had he considered traveling again, only as a vacation instead of trying to find a place to settle?
Would he date?

“So, you’re okay?” Nate asked, gesturing to Mobius. “I’m as good as I can be,” He replied honestly. “He’s off with Sylvie and a bunch of others in a dangerous situation, so.” “But he didn’t hurt you?” Nate stressed. Mobius narrowed his eyes at his friend, rethinking what it was he thought Nate was worried about. “Loki Laufeyson would not hurt me,” He stated plain, firm and calmly. “Loki would, and has, laid down his life for me. He is my best friend. I don’t always trust what he’s about to do, but I do trust that I am never safer than when he’s with me.” Nate blinked in surprise. “He almost leveled New York.” “So have the Avengers. It’s all about PR.”
