you all know i dont really ever complain about ensekai’s translations (because i understand the concept of localisation and how translating is about more than translating a text literally) but man. what is this

in japanese, ena says “一緒にいよう、瑞希” (isshoni iyouyo, mizuki). let’s break it down.

  • 一緒に (issho ni) -> very simply means “together”.
  • いよう (iyou) -> this one is the verb to stay (居, here spelled in hiragana simply as い) + the suffix 〜よう, which expresses eg volition, proposition, or invitation. so, again, a very straightforward “let’s stay”.
  • (yo) -> this particle can have a lot of meanings (eg giving opinions, alerting, agreeing, contradicting and many more tbh), but i think in this context it’s just emphatic (so it’s kinda untranslatable in this sense).

in the confrontation prior to this moment, both mizuki and ena have used the word “friend/friends” multiple times in talking about their relationship but also the concept of friendship in general. however there were a couple of moments that had ambiguous wording that toed the line between platonic and romantic, this line being a very key one. what i mean by this is that it’s ambiguous on purpose. if the writers wanted to use the word “friend”, they would have used it, as they did in previous lines. it’s ambiguous on purpose!!! there was absolutely no reason to change it, even keeping localisation in mind. “let’s stay together” doesnt feel as clunky as for example rui’s “i hope your heart will be protected” (which is beautiful but i understand it doesn’t flow as nicely in english as in japanese, so i understand why they’d change it).

and like honestly i could technically be okay with this change if not for the fact that 1. apparently they translated this line the right way on the sticker which emphasises to me how this baffling translation choice wasn’t about localisation but about toning down the homo, and most importantly 2. ensekai treatment of mizuki is maddening and im so tired of it. somehow she’s both not Girl enough for them to use the right pronouns for her, yet she’s Girl enough that her (purposefully!) ambiguously romantic moments with another girl need to be censored #nohomo style… ensekai really couldnt decide whether to be just transphobic or homophobic towards mizuki so they just went for both like damn. okay

Tired of this ☹️
