One thing I think we do not focus enough on in discussion about 17776 (and one of my favorite aspects of the story) is how the probes are not human. As much as they bicker, play and talk like a group of people would, they are fundamentally different.

They do not belong anywhere or to anyone anymore, and they barely did in the first place. JUICE, Despite joking about being french, does not at all belong to french culture or people -- Bois describes him as "southern". His personality and understanding of the world is built around information taken in passively and unconsciously over thousands of years. This goes for the other two as well, especially Nine

They do not have bodies. They'll never touch or feel or smell. They have never and will never have common human experiences- delights or inconveniences. The common human experiences they spend their lives making commentary on, they are almost entirely disconnected from !!!

maybe i like my tech a little bit inconvenient

maybe i like pulling out my debit card instead of using apple pay. maybe i like untangling my wired headphones. maybe i like typing something into the search bar instead of using siri or whatever. maybe i like curating my own social media feeds over an algorithm. i just don’t think everything has to be perfectly streamlined and efficient i like it when things feel tethered to the real world.

If they advanced too much further technologically, those advances would inevitably intrude on their humanity. People wanted to walk. They wanted to take the bus that smells like cigarettes. They wanted those precious three minutes between asking a question and knowing the answer. [...] They found that they needed things to be just a little bit difficult once in a while. They needed to stub their toe and wait in line and see that Check Engine light. They decided to leave their existence just a little short of perfect, because they wanted to want.

17776 (aka the story that fundamentally altered my understanding of the human condition)

I think I got a little overkill with James' outfit but I don't know, I was watching Thierry Mugler when I was drawing him so... (I am also unfortunately diagnosed with being a Fashion design major student)

JWST's design was partly inspired by @/robinwaaaaa's design for the spacecraft, I really liked their idea of giving James baggy/ large clothes to make the silhouette appear bigger. The IRL telescope was huge, but very light (somewhere half the weight of Hubble)

Now I can't help myself but jot down my thought process coming up with these's two gjinkas. James and Nancy are (pretty much) polar opposites, and I want that to be conveyed somehow through the design. JWST's long light colored hair >< NGRST's short dark hair. Also their faces: one is an LCD screen (flatface), and the other is more like of a doll. The mechanical parts on James' body leans more towards aesthetic than function, but this is not the case with Nancy (she has to have strong arms to play games all day). So on so forth. Compared to my Nine and Ten's design, I made this wayy more complicated than it should be. But it was fun! And Hubble shall be next.

it is continually inspiring to me that there is a nearly middle aged man who writes for a sports website who posts like us, truly the posters spirit can be found anywhere

I love people putting their favorite Jon Bois Twitter bits in the tags. Like the one where he reacts to an illegibly jpeg compressed image, or how he posts his nonsense guide to NFL overtime rules (complete with "Designed by Jon" at the bottom)

just gonna keep posting these the people need to see them
