The original idea, floated by Maddie during one of their after shift breakfasts, was a surprise party.

“We can do it at Bobby and Athena’s house,” Maddie said. Tommy found himself involuntarily smiling. It had been months, but the part of him that loved excuses not to be a cynical asshole always felt warm and fuzzy remembering it was Bobby and Athena’s house now. The two of them had gotten married at the courthouse with only their kids as witnesses a few weeks after the truck bombing. Evan was still a little put out that he wasn’t invited, even though he had to admit he didn’t have, ha ha, a leg to stand on.

Buck hung up and dialed again, he’d already left Tommy two messages to call him back, another one wouldn’t make a difference. Maybe Tommy was driving; he never answered the phone when he was driving.
