A Raft in an Ocean of Blood - Jax & Zooble oneshot
THIS WORK IS PART OF THE HUMANITY SERIES; AN AFTER SHOW AU CONSISTING OF A SERIES OF ONESHOTS, WHERE EACH ONESHOT IS FOCUSSED ON A DIFFERENT SHIP
summary/excerpt: Nothing matters.
Everything matters.
A question that kills them both: What does that mean for me?

Okay, so technicalllyyyyy this isn't focussed on a SHIP, but it's a fic that interrogates the crux of this series...so if you're into nerdy stuff and existentialism, give this a read
"It was a lie" <- zooble referring to caine's ep 7 adventure "it's all a lie" <- jax referring to the concept of humanity (and retaining it in the digital circus)
repeating this to myself forever and ever

because zooble would accept themself as jordan as soon as they could - because they value their humanity, crave it, desire it, instead of shunning it. in that digital hellscape where the parts of them they were forever, was ripped to pieces, they had to learn to plant their own to feet on the ground - then focus on their mind, then the rest of their body. they found themself as the rebellious one, swearing to themself to fight the saturated reality until they could come back to the true one. they understand that humanity is a beautiful thing, even if it is treacherous
and jax would struggle to accept himself as zach, dragging along the mask of the purple bunny as long as he could - even if its just dead weight. because he detestes humanity, doesn't trust it, and knows that it's hurt him once, and will hurt him again. in that alternate plane where autonomy was tethered, thoughts were distorted and conventions were broken down, jax found himself fall into the archetype - not because he liked it at all, really, but because it was relief and escape from a humanity that he dictates to have hurt him. in his mind, humanity is a treacherous thing, even if it's beautiful.
my very lukewarm take is that you can't cultivate happiness passively. you can't just sit there waiting for happiness through barrel through like a bulldozer; you have to put yourself out there, again and again, get disappointed and get back up. its in-between the cracks that you find happiness - the true kind - and its wonderful. i swear, it's worth it guys
i mean a thought that always keeps me going forward in the worst of times is thinking about how proud future me will be for surviving the current moment. and i know this to be true because current me is immensely proud of past me for going thru shit and surviving. its okay now but it will be soon; maybe even bettr
