Toward a Reductionist Ontology of the Dog: A Failed Reconstruction Study

Abstract

What is a dog? Some define it as a loyal companion; others reduce it to a configurable assemblage of biological components. For centuries, the ontological status of the dog has remained unresolved, inspiring scientists across the spectrum in their for search for the essence of what makes a dog what it is. In this study, we sought to definitively determine whether a dog is more than the sum of its parts.

To this end, we collected a heterogeneous sample of dogs representing over 200 recognized and unrecognized sub-breeds. Subjects were systematically disassembled, liquefied, and reconstituted using state-of-the-art methodologies borrowed indiscriminately from biology, chemistry, and, yes, even metaphysics. A total of 2,000 reconstructed dogs were produced and assessed for viability.

Results were substantive. 0 out of 2,000 reconstituted specimens exhibited signs of life, consciousness, tail-wagging, or emotional attachment. These findings strongly suggest that dogs may possess emergent properties not preserved under extreme reductionist protocols.

Despite the robustness of these results, we acknowledge potential limitations, including sampling bias related to geography, gender, and sexuality, as well as insufficient funding and a lack of regulatory oversight due to the small size of our team. Further research is required to confirm these findings at scale. We hope this study provides a foundational framework for better-funded laboratories to continue the investigation.
