I see a lot of takes about how Varian would actually hate being the Royal Engineer, how him working for the crown defeats his character arc, how ooc it is for him, etc etc. And I can see where they’re coming from, but also I very much disagree.

All he ever wanted to do was help people. That was his entire goal, help people and prove the merits and wonders of alchemy. And now that’s literally his job. He gets paid to do that. He’s getting royal funding to do whatever he wants. You think Rapunzel is assigning him jobs? Hell no she dgaf. And Frederic probably avoids him too much to establish any tasks or rules. He gets tax dollars to fuck around in the fanciest lab he can dream of, doing whatever he wants. And he has unlimited access to historical and scientific texts.

Even if you do interpret him as still having animosity towards Corona, that’s the best revenge. The crown pays him to do what almost caused their downfall. He’s in his golden spinny chair giggling maniacally all day. He won.
