Any story claiming to be a deconstruction of fairy tales but has nothing to offer except new types of violence, more explicit sex, and a general attitude of “lol happy endings aren’t real” is like. such a cultural waste of time tbh

know what actually is a good deconstruction of a fairy tale? Shrek. It fucks up just about everything in a normal fairy tale and still manages to have a happy ending with a good message and never once has to be ‘gritty’ or ‘dark’. It’s actually really well done.

“The trouble is that we have a bad habit, encouraged by pedants and sophisticates, of considering happiness as something rather stupid. Only pain is intellectual, only evil interesting. This is the treason of the artist; a refusal to admit the banality of evil and the terrible boredom of pain.”

- Ursula LeGuin, ‘The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas’

You see it's quite simple: if they call the earth Gaia, it's fantasy. If they call it Terra, that's sci-fi

If there's one vampire, it's horror. If there's 100+ and they have politics, it's urban fantasy.

btw if youre young and scared of doing adult things without your parents ive learned that like 90% of the time you can just tell the doctors office or the dmv "haha sorry ive never done this without help before... can you show me how to do this?" the employee will not care. if that means anything to you

The above is true.

Also, if you feel like you need information before you go, ask a public librarian first.

"haha sorry ive never *gone to the dmv before* *made a budget* *selected a primary care doctor* *planned meals* … can you tell me how to prepare for/research this?"

A good librarian will ask you more about what you need to do, and guide you through the websites or other resources with you try to understand it, print/email a copy for you, and also draw on personal experience as much as possible -- falling just short of giving you actual legal or medical advice.

Plus you are helping the library by using resources and adding to their stats.

male entitlement in academic spaces is so boring. can’t tell you how many times i’ve been in a class and a girl gives a short, insightful analysis, and then a dude raises his hand and says “jumping off of that…” then says literally the same thing she said but longer and worse.

I hate to be that guy, but it doesn’t just happen to women. The assholes who do that will do that to anyone who’s analysis isn’t sufficiently complex and long winded for them.

Been done to me by people of both genders.

Also I have been guilty of doing this, so I apologize. Because I was overly excited and just couldn’t wait to talk…. yeah.

(Nothing is ever clear cut eh….)

So i tried it both ways and uh

i mean how do you do the first one without pulling out all your hair?

this made me laugh really hard….

and it made me realize that girls and boys pull their shirt off differently. /amazed

but seriously I think girls just do the cross arm thing because of HAIR like demonstrated

So one year, one URL change, and a hair cut later, I decide to try again… FOR SCIENCE!

Its not science unless you write it down so

First method:

Well done, i guess…

Second:

I fucked up

Girls… how?

I DON’T UNDERSTAND HOW WE CAN HAVE SUCH DIFFERENT WAYS OF TAKING OFF SHIRTS AND SO MUCH DIFFICULTY DOING IT THE OTHER WAY

I FIGURED IT OUT!!!!!

It’s all in the way that girl/boys shirts are made.

Girls shirts have less armpit room then boy’s do and are generally shorter so pulling it off over your head is more practical because by lifting your arms all the way up you make enough room for the sleeves to just slip off.

Boys shirts have more room and are generally longer so it is easy to slip them off over your head.

but if you take a girls shirt off like a boys shirt you will get your arms caught because there isn’t much armpit space.

and if you take a boys shirt off like a girls shit you will still have your head in it when you’ve lifted your arms all the way up because of the shirt’s length.

It has nothing to do with us. It is entirely to do with how our shirts are made. I figured it out for you. YOU’RE WELCOME!

bless you

look what is back on my dash. Jesus.

My mom ran placement testing at her university’s English department for many years, and she’s talked about how she and the grad students who helped read the student essays would often see these incoming freshmen do what they called “keyword searches”, meaning they’d zero in on a keyword in the essay prompt, write a long rant about that word or phrase, and completely miss the point of the overall prompt. Basically, they weren’t reading the entire prompt and actual arguments being made, and instead would have knee-jerk reactions to a couple of words within the larger text, leading to baffling and hilariously off-base responses.

That’s what tumblr users do all the time, and they’d be placed in the lowest level of freshman English due to their poor reading comprehension lol. When you have someone just wildly missing the point in your notifications and ranting about a small piece of a post, and not engaging with what the post actually says at all, they’re doing a keyword search. Recognize it for the poor reading comprehension it is and realize you don’t have to take it seriously.

the more i watch star trek tos, the more it becomes abundantly clear that the reason why modern trek doesnt get kirk at all is because they dont utilise mccoy nearly as much anymore

in modern trek, they always present the idea of logic vs emotion, with spock being logic and kirk being emotion, but thats not how tos has it. in tos, the logic vs emption debate is spock vs mccoy. kirk is supposed to be the mediator between the two, sometimes siding with one side over the other, sometimes finding a middle ground between the two. thats why hes the captain, hes able to see all angles and pick the best course

when you make kirk the emotional one, it completely breaks the format, because 9 time out of 10, it means kirk has to be correct. theres no more balance

mccoy is just as important to tos as spock is, and while i do understand why spock is as popular as he is, without mccoy, the show doesnt work. you need them both. kirk spock and mccoy are the three leads of the show, and removing one requires you to change the others, which is whats happened to kirk
