The newly discovered 9th planet is 60 billion miles away from the sun, and is between one and 10 times the mass of the earth. It takes up to 20,000 years to complete one orbit around the sun. The planet was found by Caltech researchers Mike Brown and Konstantin Batygin by using mathematic and computer modeling. While it has not been directly observed, the planetary scientists anticipate its discovery via telescope within five years or less.

Note: If the name “Planet 9” is throwing you off, recall that Pluto was reclassified as a dwarf planet, and a part of the Kuiper belt. Read more »here.

NASA’s recent discovery of Kepler-186f, the first habitable Earth-sized planet is big news in humankind’s long search for extraterrestrial life.
A universe full of exoplanets: Thanks to the Kepler Space Telescope, which was launched in 2009 to hunt planets across the universe, we’ve managed to find around 1800 exoplanets so far, many of which have been discovered in just the last year or so.
