Overall my favourite season is probably season 1. Season 2 IS very good, and the MS arc is IMMACULATE, but season 1 is actually the best to me.
There's just this very hopeful-yet-realistic vibe to it, and the stakes are overall pretty low, like the weekly plots rotate around things like riders being attached to bills, and bill signings, and work trips, plus a few things that make a very interesting overall arc.
Like the stagnation arc that culminates in Let Bartlet be Bartlet? Immaculate. Danny being the one to break the memo story? Artful.
And yeah, okay part of the reason i love season 1 is because I am a Danny girl (not quite to the level I'm a CJ girl, but I love that man), and half of his appearances in the whole show are in season 1. I'll admit it.
But there's just such good narrative juice. The MS reveal. Them trying to find their footing. CJ's personal-versus-professional arc. Speaking truth to power. THEE best christmas episode (argue with the wall, because it is. Noel who?). Charlie and Zoey, which of course ends with one of the best finales of the show (the truth is, if the show does one thing perfectly ALMOST every season, it's the finales. But What Kind of Day has it Been? is right up there). Leo's alcoholism and the fact that it's literally not even the worst scandal.
It's also very funny. Woot canaw. "I don't understand, did you trip over something?". Gail the goldfish. Secret plan to fight inflation.
The only like, negative I'd claim is Mandy, and not even because I hate Mandy, but because so much of the time she's disconnected from the main narrative of the show, like they didn't know what to do with her, which is frustrating. Other than that? Poignant. Witty. Hopeful realism.
If I had to pick a top 5, like absolutely had to narrow it to five:
- He Shall, from time to time...
- Take Out the Trash Day
- The Short List
- What Kind of Day has it been?
- Crackpots and These Women
But also In Excelsis Deo, and Celestial Navigation, and Enemies, and The State Dinner- you get my point!
