Can we please all agree that SOME (emphasis in SOME) fandoms, specially the ones with queer people, just straight up don't like women and people of colour (mostly black people)? And I want to talk about some points.
- We all love to talk about shows that give representation and yes, kudos to that. But most of the time that representation only lies in white male gay couples (and some japanese bc of anime) and some of them are not canonical couples but ships. I'm not saying that there are no media representations of queer poc and women but I rarely see people talk about them.
- It's a discourse that I see that I would like to talk about, queer ships/couples that include poc get barely discussed. And it's because they just simply don't like poc, period. POC characters rarely are given the benefit of the doubt because they rather give their complex analysis to white/pale skin characters while villainize the dark skinned characters and straight up just erasing them from the narrative OR minimizing their value in their stories. This sounded too specific and I haven't structured a more expanded version of this but it's something that makes sense, I swear. (And I need people to back me up with this, give me your insight plik)
- Sapphic representation also rarely gets attention because they don't consider it as interesting as m/m content. It's either because they just prefer fetishize gay men or because they don't take women's attraction for other women seriously because it's difficult for them to decenter men of their lives. Queer women are also often dismissed as fetish content for men and that makes it even harder to be taken seriously.
- This is also something that I see a lot, putting down women for the sake of the gay male ship. No, this woman character doesn't interfere in the way of your ship. And also, please, don't let women be cucks just because of this weird fantasy a lot of people have where the man leaves the woman for the other man.
I want to see the insights of other people, especially queer poc and women. I don't want to cause any uproar because these are topics that NEED to be taken seriously in fandom discourse. Thanks for reading my little thoughts. π¦πππ©·
The sheer fact of the matter is that fandom is mostly male-centered, misogynistic, and racist. And thatβs not a problem for us as queer people of color to solve. That is white fandomβs problem to solve because they are the ones causing it a majority of the time.
Thatβs the long and short of it. Thereβs no amount of us rehashing the same thirty year old discourse about how fandom is misogynistic and racist because the people who would benefit the most from these discussions simply do not care to listen and have no intentions of magically shifting their perspective to one that possibly decenters them or the male characters they ship.
So my only contribution to this discourse at this point in time is for queer people of color to find community amongst ourselves and keep the misogynistic racists out of our fandom spaces. And for white people who actually want to do something about it, I have said ad nauseum that you need to support the queer people and Black people in your respective fandoms. No, not just paying lip service whenever one of these types of posts appears and makes short work of your guilty conscience; I mean actual material support.
That means including us in your reblogs and shares and recommendations. That means including us in your fandom communities and events and not treating us like interlopers for trying to make space for ourselves or center characters in fiction who reflect our identities, fantasies, and lived experiences. That means not sending anonymous vitriol telling us our ships and our fanworks are somehow invalid because something, something βBlack people cant be in Japan.β Think of a better reason to hate on our headcanons and ships other than the fact that seeing Black women centered bothers you so bad it compels you to ostracize and exclude us from fandom spaces if not harass us and run us out. Shutting up is also an option since we are not really bothering you to begin with.
That also means learning how to color dark skin and how to draw Black people without making us into ashy looking racist caricatures. If my amateur self-taught ass can draw and color Black characters, then a lot of you seasoned artists have NO EXCUSE.
It also means being proactive and vigilant when you see your queer and Black mutuals being actively attacked on your feed or in a Discord server. Because doing nothing is the same as tacitly approving the harm youβre witnessing being caused. And again, the responsibility isnβt on nor should it ever be on US to fix this issue.
Know better, do better. No excuses for why yβall canβt treat us like we are part of the fandom community other than you just are terrible people and have no actual queer or Black people in your lives.

So Much Happened today. Had to help Mom setup her art for a show at a library and spent the morning/early afternoon trying to get her labels to print. The PDF kept printing blanks.
Then I got home and had to bring in all the food that was outside cuz it got above freezing. My friend came to pick up a microwave, I had to cook dinner, and it's game night!
The sink was overflowing before because nobody had time to empty it. Dad got home from the therapy pool & can barely walk. Emptying the pots from the food outside made MORE dishes, so I had to fill & run the dishwasher immediately after our game.
And I have an interview tomorrow morning, so I had to do laundry. I think I am sufficiently exhausted already.

I'm sorry but it needs to be said. "Say her name" is only used for Black women. Can we please not do this
"After the police killings of Eric Garner and Michael Brown in 2014, thousands gathered to protest anti-Black police brutality that December. We joined the march under a banner with the names of Black women killed by police. While Garnerβs and Brownβs deaths justifiably sparked a wave of nationwide protest over lethal police killings, the public silence around Black women demonstrated that the killings of Michelle Cusseaux had yet to be memorialized in widespread activation and denunciation. So, we began chanting βSay! Her! Name!β and the #SayHerName campaign was born to cut through this disturbing reality and resist the invisibility of Black women, girls, and femmes by telling their stories of police violence.
The following year, the #SayHerName Mothers Network β a community of mothers and family members of Black women, girls and femmes killed by police violenceβwas created and brought together to attend the first ever #SayHerName vigil in Union Square. The Mothers Network emerged from the campaign as a recognition of the isolation and βloss of the lossβ experienced by the family members. There was an urgent need to redefine a communal care ethic to support family members in the aftermath of police violence, as well as public failure to acknowledge the police killings of their daughters and siblings.
Over the course of ten years, this campaign has grown to provide an analytical framework to understand the ways in which Black women, girls, and femmes lives are not only taken by state-sanctioned violence, but then further erased by public silence."

well, wyll's story was rushed, last minute and poorly written at that. unfortunately, it shows very glaringly in his character (obviously) and makes him really flat to try and play with when interacting with him. I dont think people care about his backstory because I really dont think enough people get around to hearing it you know? like theres just no draw the way the others were prioritized to have deeper, more engaging stories.
its not wylls fault or anything, hes a victim of bad writing, time/money issues and I do hate to say it but he's one of two rushed characters like this and neither are white. I love bg3 and all I've seen from the developmental team is that theyre really passionate and care but it just kinda... makes you wonder idk lol.
it does suck because I want to like wyll. I think people also dislike his moral standing? like I see people complain hes a goody two shoes which is weird point, but its dnd. someone HAS to fulfill that "we need to do what's right" type thing and I can't say literally anyone else in camp qualifies more than him.
I wish he had more to him but sadly just engaging in his story with "i did this one time' then the solution being shockingly easy to get him out of everything (excluding iron throne cuz thats extremely difficult lol) makes it hard to care about investing much in him when it falls sl flat in tbe face of the ones they favored ykwim
Hey bud, I don't think you actually want to like Wyll. You just typed a whole bunch of words that boils down to "he's boring," and I disagree. But at least you recognize that Wyll was given less thought from the devs cuz he's Black!
The best shot of the year
