ꫂ᭪݁ 𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐤 𝐝𝐮𝐭𝐲 …. 𝐜𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐨𝐥𝐨
It feels like she’s been doing laundry for years.
The washer hums in the background, the dryer clicking softly as it cools, and her bedroom is half taken over by piles of clothes—whites, darks, towels, hoodies that somehow multiply when you’re not looking. She’s sitting cross-legged on the bed, folding slowly now, movements a little more tired than earlier.
Chris meanwhile is absolutely not helping.
He’s been assigned sock duty, which she thought would be the easiest but apparently it means sitting on the floor and flicking balled-up socks at her whenever she’s not looking. A third bounces off her stomach.
She clenches her jaw.
“Chris,” she says, warning laced into her voice.
“What?” he asks innocently, already holding another sock between his fingers. “I’m helping.”
“With what?” she mutters folding a t-shirt that refuses to work with her. Her cramps have been constant all day the kind that make everything feel more your body, your patience, your thoughts. She’s been on her feet since morning, switching loads, hauling baskets, trying to feel accomplished instead of miserable.
Another sock hits her shoulder.
finally that was it for her.
She drops the shirt onto the bed harder than necessary and turns to glare at him. “Can you please not? I’ve literally been doing laundry all day and I just want this done.”
The smile slips from his face almost immediately.
“Oh,” he says quietly, pushing himself up off the floor. “Hey. I didn’t mea-”
She turns away again not wanting to cry over something so stupid, drifting her focus on folding a pair of sweats. “I’m just tired,” she adds, softer now. “And cranky. And my body hates me today.”
There’s a pause behind her. No more flying socks.
Then Chris steps closer.
He doesn’t speak at first. He just reaches out, gently taking the sweats from her hands and setting them aside. She starts to protest but before she can, his arms slide around her waist from behind, careful and warm.
“I’m sorry,” he murmurs, resting his chin on her shoulder. “I was trying to make you laugh. Not make it worse.”
She exhales, tension draining from her shoulders despite herself.
He presses a soft kiss to the side of her neck slow, nothing rushed about it. Then another under her ear.
“You okay?” he asks quietly.
She shakes her head a little. “Not really. I feel gross and everything hurts and I’m annoyed at nothing.”
“Hey,” he says gently, tightening his arms just a bit. “That’s not nothing. That’s a lot especially when you’re hurting.”
She leans back into him, finally letting herself take a deep breath.
And then just because he’s still Chris. He starts shifting his weight.
Before she can react, he nudges her sideways and gently tackles her back onto the bed, laughing as they tumble into the piles of warm laundry. She lets out a surprised laugh, half frustration and half relief as he braces himself above her so he doesn’t put his weight on her stomach.
“Christopher,” she scolds weakly, smiling despite herself.
He grins down at her, brushing her hair out of her face. “You looked like you needed a break.”
He dips down and kisses her soft and unhurried before peppering her cheek, her jaw, and her neck with little kisses.
“Okay, okay,” she says, pushing lightly at his chest. “You’re forgiven.”
“Good,” he says, stealing one more kiss. Then he rolls onto his side beside her pulling her into his chest and tucking her in like it’s the most natural thing in the world.
They lie there for a moment, surrounded by laundry and quiet.
“I’ll help,” he says finally. “For real this time. No sock throwing. I’ll fold stuff I’ll put it away, I’ll even separate all the annoying piles.”
She looks up at him. “You swear?”
“I swear,” he says solemnly. “And after, I’ll get you some snacks. And we can just watch movies so you can stop being productive.”
Her eyes soften. “That sounds really good.”
He kisses the top of her head and squeezes her. “You don’t have to do everything alone, especially on your period”
She nods, curling closer into him, her body finally feeling a little lighter.
The laundry can wait five more minutes or actually longer.
