Hi! I'm E. "Papermonkey" Jokinen, a queer Finnish art person who has a whole entire dinosaur tattooed across me chest. (They/she) Existing since 1987.

It appears I've gotten quite a few new followers lately, so I'm finally making a pinned post.

Hi!

First off, this is a personal blog of a former chronic art student in their mid-thirties, who's possibly a forest troll. While my art might be cute, I do not aim my material at kids (my target audience is me), so do be aware that by following this blog you run the risk of seeing things like 3am brain farts and doodles of orc boobs.

If you want just the art without the brain barf, you might prefer my bluesky (@paperiapina.bsky.social) or my twitter, though that's mostly left for archival purposes (@Paperiapina) or DeviantArt (deviantart.com/paperiapina)

It's all Queer in here.

I have a chronically hyperactive imagination that has spawned multiple headworlds, including but not limited to:

The DINOSAUR PROJECT THINGY: Working title "the Herd". Follows a small clan of troodontid dinosaurs called the Singing People and their herd of cows (domesticated Einiosaurus). Based on Two Medicine formation. #the Herd #dinosaur headworld

ENTICA: At the beginning of the pandemic I resurrected an old headworld from my highschool days nearly two decades ago, and what started as a fun little nostalgia trip to my old fantasy furries has now turned into a sorta speculative evolution worldbuilding project. #Entica

WINGBEANS: Doodled some funny little griffin-y things. People seem to like them, and I find them fun to draw, so I keep making them. #Wingbeans

WURR: A comic project featuring mutated monster dogs I started in 2007. Currently on hold for life reasons. #wurr

ARCANTH: Working title (a name of a character) of a fantasy story thingie I want to make. Really needs a better tag, though. #Arcanth

SIMON'S ZOO: What if mythical beings had a magic zoo. Has things like vampire janitor and centaur animal caretaker (half the tag is probably Pony the centaur, because I like drawing her) Kinda on hold? #Simon's zoo

I tag my adventures in tabletop RPGs as #Paper plays DnD

I tag posts with myself in them as #the Papermonkey

I chronicle my experiences as a pet invertebrate owner in the tag '#Bookshelf bugs'. I currently have a small colony of Armadillidium vulgare isopods of the Magic Potion color morph.

ALSO! With so many new followers here, it means there's a lot of people who haven't yet seen my tattoo! To remedy this, you may now bask in the glory that is the chest dinosaur! (the flowers are my mom's favourites)

Random Entica thought!

Now that I have officially included a third sapient species to the mix in the form of a bird (the Nraa), I should probably give them a proper design at some point.

Which means I need to solidify what exactly does "bird" mean for the setting of Entica.

I'm kinda thinking of throwing in some enantiornithine features to the flying birds to underline the NotEarth-ness of the setting, in addition to the more theropod-y flightless birds like the wolfbirds I've drawn earlier. (in case Entica did have its own "end Cretaceous extinctiont event" analogue, it was gentler than that on Earth, leaving more room for different forms to wiggle their way through to "modern" day.)

Still pondering the exact level of toothiness versus full beak of Nraa, specifically, and if beak, whether to go more parrot/kea or corvid in shape for the tool use purposes. 🤔

Slapped some quick thoughts on the pocket sketchbook.

Ignore the beak, will try different shapes later, but I think proper beak is the way to go here. Some Entican birds do still have teeth, but I wanted better ability to manipulate tools, so hinged beak like modern birds felt more appropriate. Also zygodactyl feet for even better manipulation potential!

Then I threw in some enantiornithine features, like wing claws and lack of proper pygostyle (no proper tail fan) for some less "normal" bird feel! I'm debating whether long tail spine, like an early pterosaur style rudder or a maniraptoran tail would fit them, or if I should rather ditch the tail spine entirely.

Color wise probably something monochromatic with a brightly colored detail, african grey parrot style. No visual sexual dimorphism, as these guys mate for life.

Quite the winter wonderland out here!

My wintry adventure ended with some coffee shop doodling! I'm pretty much on a vacation mode and it's doing great things to my creative juices.

It's funny how looking at a sketch through phone camera immediately reveals all the wonkyness in proportions you managed to not notice while looking directly at the paper itself while drawing, huh.

Anyway! Adjusted the design of the bird monsters a bit. A little tweak in the torso, some tuning the leg position for sturdier balance, etc. I'm feeling attempting to fir both of them on the same page miiiiight have been a mistake, there's not quite enough space for the second bird monster. Or at least I need to redraw it partially to fit the space better. We'll see!

(Extra floof on Murdie's feet now that there are no ARPG rules saying I can't because the extra floofy feetsies belonged to another, more expensive morph, I can make my own birds look just how I want them now, mwahahahahahaa!)

Burds!

Things that feel weirdly exhilarating.

When you accidentally spill blueberry juice (extra stainy!) but it misses the carpet! By FIVE! MILLIMETERS!!

Like. Sad to spill the juice, but hot DANG, that was SO close to be an absolute disaster carpet laundry event, and it didn't!

Victory!

I just discovered that there is a pizza vending machine along one of my walk routes??

A vending machine that dispenses pizza???

First of, that's new, I'm pretty sure I hadn't seen that before. In the past I have occasionally taken a shortcut directly through the spot where there's now a pizza vending machine.

Secondly the concept of a Vending Machine that hands out freshly baked pizza sounds. Absolutely wild to me.

Like. What?

Went on a pizza hunt FOR SCIENCE!

Not gonna lie, it looks pretty great. Warm puzza in three minutes is a pretty neat way to feed yourself while out on a walk!

There was even a wooden knife to cut it into smaller pieces in the box! (Was hidden underneath the pizza, so not visible in the photo. I only discovered the knife after partial devouring.)

Neat!

Ugh. Fucken AI.

I'm trying to research old timey houses, like up to viking era, and the reference images I'm trying to find are like.

90% outdoor photos. Which are mostly fine, I'm filtering AI images out. But looking at articles to see the anatomy of the indoor spaces, and I get GINORMOUS glass windows that are definetely modern in design, halls the size of mansions in iron age setting, a kitchen hood just floating in air above a campfire, and two headed sheep (just stick two front halves of a sheep into a singular animal, who needs tail end anyway. Amphisbaena of a woolly ungulate).

Fiiiiiine, I'll drag my arse to the library tomorrow. It's cold as polar bear's freezer outside, but this troll house isn't gonna design itself, and internet is no help.

Had Thoughts (tm) of the old Murderburd thing, about potential redesign of the birdmonsters.

Having gone through what-ifs of huge dogs, dinosaurs, dragons, pterosaurs, owlbears and giant lynx-type cats, and none of them felt quite right, I briefly wntertained the idea of wingbeans, but the trolls didn't feel enough like "small cute pet" people instead of "large hunting animal" people. But what if something wingbeany, but big?

Also vestigial arms.

(I want to call the species "aarnivaris", as a sorta play on words with aarnikotka, Finnish for griffin, but I don't think that would translate back into English. Aarni is an ancient word for a spirit being or guardian of treasure, kotka means eagle and varis is a crow. On the other hand, Murderburd does not translate into Finnish without losing all the fun from the pronunciation, so *shrug*)

Just couple more thoughts on aarnivaris anatomy.

Still not quite decided on style of tail. Keep flopping back and forth between dinosaur style and cat style, and different possible variations of each. Also pondering different arms. I think I'll mix juuuuust a dash of alvarezsaur flavouring to the more abelisaur original feel, because the original paw like design didn't feel fucked up enough. I like when vestigial limb anatomy gets fucky.

Also wing paw anatomical differences??? Maybe??

It is Cold As Fuck outdoors, but I still had to do a grocery run. Which means an excellent excuse for some coffee shop doodling to warm up!

My DnD group is going to do an oops all bards one shot with all tieflings party. We'll be level 6, I picked college of Swords with dual wielding fighting styles, and ended up picking spells that were all basically either fire (Fire Bolt, Burning Hands, Pyrotechnics) or noice (Booming Blade, Thaumaturgy, Thunderclap, Earth Tremor, Thunderwave, Shatter, Knock. I got a magic initiate feat to get some sorcerer spells in the mix)

And two uncommon magic items. Technically I guess it would have been appropriate to pick couple magic swords. Buuuuuuuut... so it turns out there are magic tattoos that count as uncommon magic items. Both my magic items are thereby tattoos (Coiling Grasp and Eldritch Claw).

So it turns out I made a heavy metal drummer with pyrotechnics flavour.

The only thing I'm sad about is that there was no way for me to get access to Thunder Step, but I guess I'll live. It's just a one shot.

(For the Finnish impaired the text on the screen shot says -17°C, wind makes it feel like -24° C. For comparizon, 0°C is when water freezes.)

I think it is some absolute bullshit that it's possible to pull a singular tiny muscle where a rib meets with the spine, while you're asleep, and have it fuck up your mobility for three days, also radiating into headache for the first of those three days.

I can still feel something being off when I bend certain ways, but at least it doesn't feel like a stab now and I can sleep without painkillers.

Bodies are wild.
