Heated Rivalry inspired a hockey player named Jesse Kortuem to come out in a public statement (link to text of screenshots). It’s wonderful to read a story where a gay man has been able to find community in their sport. And coming out will help encourage more acceptance and community support do gay athletes.

I’m so glad Heated Rivalry is resonating with people in a way that means steps forward both in public opinion and for many individuals who have suffered in the closet for the thing they love. And I’m so moved by the bravery and action taken even if it was just anonymously telling someone from the show that they were a gay athlete. It’s all movement forward. It’s all steps toward a better future for individuals and us all.

I’m always one to say it’s not that serious, and absolutely some aspects of the show aren’t! But it’s affecting real people. Can’t get more serious than that.

no nhl player is ever going to be as truly woke as you want them to be except for when connor mcdavid (as a baby rookie) reached out to the owners of pride tape about how he could help and spearheaded teams using it on pride night. and for that he'll always be my princess diana
