i try to link all my posts with credit to the owner for all of the media i post, but sometimes, even after scouring the internet i can’t find the source! in this case, please send the link to the source along with the link to my post that needs a source to my asks inbox (my dms are closed due to spambots 💔)

the sources on my posts are on the bottom with a little "via" hyperlink

Do you also have knowledge on extinct pinnipeds? :D

absolutely! an intriguing member of the family phocidae (the true seal) is acrophoca longirostris, aka the swan-necked seal! they lived along the pacific coast of south america during the late miocene-early pliocene (7-5 million years ago)

they closely resemble the modern day leopard seal, don’t they? however, acrophoca represents a now-extinct branch of seal evolution, which means extinct seals were much more biologically diverse than they are now
