Adult female Perisphaerus sp. (order Blattodea, family Blaberidae), or “pill roach”.

Blaberus craniifer "Orin" in all her glory, this lovely lady is my first adult to molt out. This specific line of B. craniifer was bred to have consistently patterned pronotums with that jack o' lantern looking face the species is so well known for, they might be my absolute favorite roach

This is my biggest Gromphadorhina Oblongonata female yet. She will be given a name quite soon, she is very very gentle never hiss at me and always stays with the babies.

The Death’s Head Roach, Blaberus craniifer, is named for the skull-like pattern on the “pronotum”.  I generally try not to present ‘bugs’ as 'creepy,’ but the kids definitely enjoyed meeting one of these for Halloween.

Surprising fact: like many roaches, these are “ovoviviparous:” they give live birth!

Don’t worry, they’re not native (nor could they survive if they escaped) in the USA, with the exception of Key West, Fl.  They mostly live in Central America and Mexico.

Fed my roaches banana for the first time in a while and they were very excited! I think I also managed to capture some of their incredible neck flexibility in this video.

Males are winged with a wide thoracic shield, but the females are wingless and can cling very securely to the wood and bark they’re hiding under. The best-known species is L. granicollis, but that’s probably because all but one of the other 13 species were named and described in 1992.

Here is a very gravid cockroach scavenging a meal from a carpenter bee who was killed on his own doorstep by a nocturnal orb-weaver.
