i use an 8-ish year old ipad with a painfully outdated version of ArtRage. it has no lasso tool and no masking. i draw with my finger like a confused old grandpa, which means i also have no pen pressure. i only use it because it's what i've used for literally 15 years and i flat out refuse to learn different software

#i tried procreate one time at an art store and i felt like an apprentice mage being blown back by the force of magic beyond my control#i'll stick to my garbage lv.1 fire spell thank you very much#monkey see monkey do NOT do#ok but genuinely. between this and midi samples for music. i have strong opinions about underpowered tools#and how restriction breeds creativity. and how worrying less about production quality means dedicating more time to making something COOL#but now i'm getting off topic. i gotta go get some waffles man it's like 7 am lol#asks

I think you'll have more luck finding "freaky puzzleshipping" fic if you browse fanfiction.net and sort by Oldest First. You want the stuff from before the last episode aired. I'm been here from the beginning and this onslaught of "post-canon, Atem gets his own body and they're normal about it UwU" is a relatively recent phenomenon, it honestly drove me to quit reading puzzle fanfic on Ao3 because of it. Brace yourself to browse for literal hours looking for something good/interesting though, there might not be "post-canon" stuff but there will be... other things... things I can't remember without dying of embarrassment and/or cringe haha 😅

Alternatively, there's doujinshi but unfortunately I can't help you there: I was notoriously bad at finding those back in 2006 and I still am, my apologies.

Hmm yeah I've done some digging on fanfiction.net, maybe not enough yet but it's trickier to search through. I'm spoiled rotten by ao3's search and filter functions.

Surprisingly, from what I've observed, the pre-2006 ratio of Subjectively Freaky to Objectively Normal is actually about the same as recent years. It just feels like there's way more Normal nowadays due to there just being way more fics. Which means you gotta do a lot more digging to find the same relative amount of Freaky.

It seems that pre-ending fics tend to prefer canon compliant ghostly puzzleship, which is understandable. The ceremonial duel must have gotten people hooked on the Separate Bodies thing REALLY hard.

And obviously fics weren't the only fandom contributions going on back in the day. I have no doubt in my mind that there was probably some high quality Freaky Shit happening in puzzleshipping forums and private chat rooms of the era. But fics are the most accessible portal to the past that we have now, so the perspective is skewed.

But it is fun going through the old archives, awkward and cringeworthy as some of it is! It's nostalgic, even if I didn't grow up with ygo; a lot of it relentlessly reminds me of the awkward shit I wrote in like middle school LOL. It's sweet, it's human. Refreshing even, especially in this modern hellscape of sleek ai generated superslop.

(I bet Kaiba built the airship in secret and just. Whipped it out of hiding the instant he had an excuse. Oh the people in charge are horribly corrupt? Good thing I've been making my own machina this whole time!!!!! Cue a kaiba branded blimp.)

Fun third option. Yugi is too short ro have his face yoinked and nobody falls for the identity theft because the theif is too tall and Kaiba is only involved because he wants to kick their asses for the disrespect to his new stadium.

Dude got himself locked up in a puzzle for thousands of years, lost his memory, lost his name, lost all his friends, basically lost his country, all so he could save the world.

During the fail-date with Anzu, Yami does express the desire to know his past. But he doesn't want to know it because knowing it would upset the norm. He knows, somehow, that learning his memories will take him away from Yugi. And he would rather sacrifice something he really wants, just to make sure Yugi is happy.

And on the flipside, Yugi has to keep pushing Atem towards his memories, because, he too, is a self-sacrificial little muffin. He knows that if he does not push, if he does not hurt his own heart, Yami, his other self, will never be more than that. Man. Neither of these guys know how to be selfish. Technically Anzu is the only reason that Yami decided to go to the museum. (Again, because she suggested it. Not because Yami wanted to go initially.)

THIS MAKES ME CRAZY i think about it constantly hhHHAAAUGHHHHGHHhhh both of them trying to do what they think is right and accidentally putting one another through avoidable pain as a result.

What if Yami was more obviously scared of uncovering his past. He's already nervous about it for reasons that even he isn't fully aware of. What if Yugi eased up on the whole chasing down memories thing. What if he convinced Yami that they could just take things slow, and maybe he would just happen to remember little things here and there over time.

And that's just addressing the manga continuity. That's not even taking "i want to be with you forever" and the whole orichalcos shitshow into account. Now they're COMMITTED. Now Yami thinks he was EVIL in his past life, and he desperately wants to prove that he's changed, for Yugi's sake.

What if they came out on the other end of all of that and decided Hey Yknow What? Let's finish high school before making any more massively life-altering drastic decisions. like. ok yeah we gotta move the plot along eventually and whatever but we're literally what. 16, 17 years old? we should NOT be in an ancient tomb dueling to the death. it can wait. we should be at the arcade. we should go bowling

hmmmmm i'm gonna be boring and say Nah, that was definitely not Kunsel. I think the grunt is actually referring to the buster sword. It's not a stretch to believe that Zack and Angeal, and by extention their iconic BFS, made a huge impression on the cadets that they trained and commanded during their time in SOLDIER, and that some of those cadets would still be active duty.
