I'm writing this as a storm blows outside, and at this point the high winds have removed almost all of the leaves from the trees. I want to hold on to them longer and I guess this is how I'm doing that.
I always loved playing with these seeds as a child, which I knew only as helicopters. I'm sure at the time I also knew what an actual helicopter was, but having no experience with them, these whirling seeds were my primary definition...
I love the reddish colours the seeds and leaves turn. My primary point of study for these was a small bunch of them which got trapped in the car windscreen wipers on the way back from the woods, and which were added to my box of autumn treasures. It's mostly chestnuts and acorns, there are a few other things like this too, but most of the more delicate items get preserved in other ways. I have a big collection of photos, scans and pressed leaves from over the years - I'm glad to be finally making better use of those by making more autumn art.
