league of gentlemen! before i go on a rant id like to preface that i am a logm fan. i am an ino9 fan and specifically a reece shearsmith fan. it is coming from a place of love when i say that some of the league of gentlemen fanbase is utterly insane and downright incorrect and morally wrong when it comes to papa lazarou.
papa lazarou is a racist caricature and a clear depiction of blackface. this is something i thought (or hoped) the entire fandom agreed on and just rarely acknowledged in a way of respecting that the character doesnt deserve any sort of love or respect from the shows fans. afraid that i was wrong!
i will not name the people, but a logm fan on tiktok made a post about logm/papa that wasnt necessarily bad, but their comments were.
there was a thread of 10 comments on this video when i saw it. some of which were OP admitting they were planning to do papa lazarous makeup and only didnt because their dad told them not to. another was from a different person saying that his makeup is only meant to represent circus makeup (which. 1. its still blackface. 2. a lot of circus actors did blackface, that does not mean it was okay just because its in relation to the circus??)
its so insane to me that people can be in defense of his character. you can enjoy, appreciate and love the show but should acknowledge that it is heavily flawed, outdated and straight up racist/queerphobic.
its fucking racist, denying him being blackface is racist and erasure of black peoples history, willingness to defend his character is racist, this should be obvious.

THANK YOU! Someone had to say it, I don't know what they were THINKING creating that character! I internally scream Reece Wayne into the ETHER whenever Papa Lazarou gifs come up, I feel succinctly and sincerely uncomfortable the minute he pops up onscreen. I FEAR the day they all get cancelled, REECE most especially, for creating that poor choice in history.
LITERALLYYYYY it was such an insane thing to do and the fact they still havent taken accountability or anything and instead in an interview stated that it was only intended to be demonic??? When its nothing at ALL like a demon and quite literally just racist??? And the fact that fans are just completely okay with it and LIKE the character and ive seen people find it ATTRACTIVE?????? HELLLOOOO???
