forgot to say another thing about bridge to terabithia, which is that even for a story that's sad, it's pretty tame. you hear about the death secondhand. there's no frightening death scene. there's no gore. there's no dead body. so it is a good book to get kids thinking about grief and loss without traumatizing them.

anyone else ever think about the scene in the order of the phoenix where sirius tells fred weasley there are things worth dying for and fred says i don't see you out there doing anything and at the end of that book sirius gives his life for the order and then two years later fred also gives his life fighting voldemort?

I read Katherine Paterson's essay for the 40th anniversary edition of Bridge to Terabithia, and she told the story of a young reader asking her why a little girl had to die, and she simply said she didn't know. Because that was why she wrote the entire book anyway. Because a little girl she had known had died and she didn't know why it had to happen. That raw honesty will probably forever haunt me. She didn't write the book to give us answers. She wrote it because she didn't have answers. I appreciate the book just for that.

i saw a total L take on ever after when i was looking for gifsets, which is basically that danielle should have been as meek and humble as the original character and been saved by magic.

but the premise of the entire movie from the beginning is that the grimms' fairy tale is loosely based on a true story. so there was no magic and the main character was a decent person but not the blessed virgin mary, okay. i can live with that.

"she should have shown nothing but grace and patience towards her stepmother and stepsisters - " lol, she did, for 10 years... that's long enough.

"the real cinderella wouldn't be punching people in the face!" idk who needs to hear this, but if somebody is stealing your things while mocking you, you should punch that person in the face.

"the real cinderella wouldn't be sword-fighting!" idk who needs to hear this, but if somebody is enslaving you and/or trying to rape you, you should use any weapon you have at your disposal against that person.

"they replaced god with leonardo da vinci - " i think ever after mentioned god more than the original lmao, which included talking mice and a fairy godmother, but not a supreme being. also, the whole da vinci subplot was freaking hilarious. live a little.

but anyway, the entire point of the movie is that "the real cinderella" was not the cinderella in the grimms' fairy tale, so with that in mind i think the film was well-executed.

finally watching ever after because tumblr gifs have told me it's good

also finally watching bridge to terabithia, both the 1985 version and the 2007 disney version, because i (finally) read the book several weeks ago and have been telling myself i'd watch the movie

okay i got through all three.

ever after i really liked. i thought it was a fun movie, and while i still like the original cinderella, i don't mind a twist on a fairy tale, either. it can be done well.

i was very curious about how bridge to terabithia would be adapted for the screen. while the prose was jaw-droppingly beautiful for a children's book, it was a very brief and simple story. the made-for-tv version was surprisingly good. the more recent version stayed mostly true to the book but did the same thing i would have if i'd directed it - made the concept of terabithia more elaborate and brought it to life. had i not read the book, i would have thought it was a bit childish and cringey, but having read the book, i appreciate that it captured the essence of the story while adding rich detail.

two distinct narratives continue to play out

this appears to be "a coat"

It's literally a *checks notes* military issue greatcoat. Which EVERY MILITARY SINCE 1900 (when this style gained popularity) has developed and copied and perfected over time.

British military officers circa 1940

"Tweedleland" add circa 1916 for WW1 "trench coat".

1940s US Army air force "warm coat"/trench coat/greatcoat

What the Gestapo over coat/fancy dress ACTUALLY looked like.

And finally, a double breasted long wool coat which any average joe can buy off Amazon.

Pewdiepie put on a British Officers uniform to test on whether people would actually be stupid enough to call him a Nazi and they took the bait with flying colors, great to see people just never, ever learn anything.

Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to vote Democrat.
