Here it is! My magnum opus of album cover redraws!
How to be a Human Being by Glass Animals is one of my favorite albums of all time and the album cover is so fun and puts such interesting faces to each song, so I thought I'd honor it by putting as much effort as possible.
(original album cover, episode references and progress shots under the cut!)
this gag from tails gets trolled occupies permanent real estate in my brain because it has no right being this good

People have been telling me to watch Venture Bros for years, and this commission is what pushed me to watch some episodes. I really like it so far! And these two are so silly and adorable djskfhssfkjdg
A lot of problem solving went into this one, and it was very gratifying to spend time figuring it all out. Thanks a million to the commissioner! I'm looking forward to watching more of this show :D
Since we are having fun with all of this Robot And Monster BTS content here's another favorite memory - The R&M crew (The Best Crew Ever) decorated my office for my Birthday, It was truly touching and amazing. I noticed my" "Dave's design list" white board, I always had a production assistant update the list of character concepts I had to draw for upcoming episodes, I needed that extra organizational help. The characters - Mickey The Ax, Maintenance Worker, Tween, I think the last one is Rich Mechanical. I found the concept art. When we were wrapping Rugrats production last February I found my old office -A40 and did some before and after pics. Also the close up of my desk is like a game of I Spy there's some much little R&M memorabilia, can you tell that I used to eat a lot of Altoids? And you can see the Domo cup on the back shelf.
Today with the release of the apartment fly-through video on you tube I though I would show some of the earliest concepts art and Vis-Dev for Robot and Monster's home. My rough sketches that were cluttered and very industrial, yet they had warm lived in feel. The very talented Vis Dev artist Cesar Martinez took my loose sketches and turned them into the grungy mechanical look I wanted for the show
It was built in parts, so ever space was a separate model, the animation test didn't have the kitchen, when we started production we needed one, I drew a basic concept than Cesar made it real.
The Bedroom went through a similar process
Then the apartment exterior I drew the model turns keeping the same industrial look.
And at one point early on we were thinking of having a "Robot's Lab / Workshop" in the little dome at the top, it turned out to be too many sets for our budget - but I still have my concept sketch.
This was an extra piece of art in the pitch bible.
Ogo's Apartment. I know there's many Ogo fans out there who would love to deep dive into Ogo's apartment and how it came to be.
I designed the super computer in 2009 we needed it for the pilot, but then later in production early 2011 we built the set this was my initial rough sketch.
We had the inside BTS joke that Ogo had his dead grandparents in the apartment and used them as furniture. Was he raised by his Grand Parents? The world may never know.
The apartment had to fit inside the building exterior we a floor plan, this also helps the writers, storyboard artists and directors know the layout of the apartment for blocking out action.
Here is a sneak peek from the pilot, behold the super computer!
