Richard Harmon’s role as Jake in Woodland, a beautifully complex character with flaws.

This contains a rant on my thoughts on Jake, and his character as a whole. This will contain spoilers for Woodland.

Jake is an incredibly complex character with a lot of depth.

He’s an asshole, abusive, and somewhat manipulative. I genuinely loathe this character, he’s shown to be an incredibly awful person via abusive actions to his girlfriend.

His spiral into taking his mind off his guilt by using alcohol and drugs (granted it’s not exactly drugs it’s photo developer of some kind I’m not 100% sure) is just so well done.

He’s shown to have so many emotions, especially when it comes to how he reacts to everything he learns, from the photo depicting Sparky’s “death”, to attacking Sparky, thinking it’s his only way to save him, especially after failing to save his girlfriend from her fate.

The way he cannot express his feelings properly other than through his photography (and terrible jokes to try and ward off any suspicion of something going on) which inevitably leads to his demise is so beautiful.

The scenery, even that awful cgi, really shows his decline in his mental health. His fear of not being able to stop what happens leading to him taking over and ultimately dying is so well done.

His descent in this movie due to his photography predicting things is so intriguing. At a surface level it’s somewhat bland but looking deeper and seeing how these photos affect him and his thoughts, showing him exactly what will happen without beating around the bush is so good.

“Is that what you wanted to hear Sparky? That everyone I love is either dead or fucked off a long time ago?”

“I think about ending it every fucking goddamn day like it’s a fucking hobby.”

His actions to try and save Sparky leading to his own death is so poetic to me.

And in the end, his photography is used as firestarter, just like he said it was to be used for. That’s just poetic, however sad it is.

I cannot stand people looking at him on at surface level and just thinking he’s a sad depressed boy who needs to be taken care of. No, he’s a grown man with abusive tenancies and a desire to find meaning through his photography.

He doesn’t need to be babied, he’s not a good guy who’s just sad. He’s awful. He’s literally meant to be awful.

God forbid people look deeper and find the complexities of a character.

I think some people watched the movie with their eyes closed and the volume muted, because I cannot believe all they’ve gotten from this incredibly rich character is that he needs to be taken care of.

I was so totally willing to watch this film.. definitely not tricked into into it.

I feel so jolly & joyful after watching this, so 100/10 absolute Christmas masterpiece

I think I would be part of the 100. Probably got locked up for something stupid ngl. I would think John Murphy is hella cute but try to stay away from him because he seemed violent (especially in the first season) but I wouldn't feel too good about them trying to kill him. As much as I love him as a character and everything, I don't think he and I would even remotly get along until later seasons.

Do I still want to try and date him? PLEASE, but Emori has his heart.
