1.03: "Grenade".
thinking about the significance of “mi mamá es una cabrona” when it comes to Manousos and how he deals with Carol. No wonder he’s funny now. No wonder he doesn’t become angry or cut Carol off like the other survivors. He must be so relieved, so overjoyed, to show up in Albuquerque New Mexico after months of blank, dim, evil, smiling, acquiescent faces to be confronted with someone he’s known his entire life. He only gets angry at Carol when she’s not being a bitch. He’s a bitch. He was raised by a bitch. He travelled over 8000 miles and found another bitch. They’re going to save the world.
annabeth taking the initiative to bleat like a sheep and nudging percy to follow suit has the same energy as the “I said hello to the poodle. You say hello to the poodle.” scene we didn’t get from season one—i really appreciate a) her comedic timing and b) percy resigning himself to just do whatever she tells him to do
i love aika so much..she's so silly. i think it should be legal for her to kill
crazy that these were the means by which the hive tried to assimilate carol in the very first episode of the show, and still people were like "but have we considered she's in the wrong for being so freaked out about all this 🤔" after watching the second. like i get why it took some people until the direct comparison to conversion therapy in episode 4, or the implicit references to colonialism in episode 7, or the confirmation of what is essentially global cultural genocide in the finale to see how wrong what the hive is doing is, but idk maybe the literal sexual assault and allusions to the rhetoric around corrective rape that were there from the beginning should have tipped you off. just a little
AVATAR FIRE AND ASH DISCUSSION
I hate hate HATE how the Mangkwan were pushed to the side. You'd think that they would be more important to the story since Varang was in most of the promo material and the movie is literally called FIRE AND ASH. The first half with the Mangkwan were great until they were reduced to Quaritch's goons.
And Varang, oh Varang. She had so much potential. A fearsome and manipulative leader who rose to power by killing her own father, turning her people from eywa, drugging her followers, mind control, sadistic pleasure in causing pain, cutting kurus, kills without remorse. And she just gets reduced to being Quaritch's girlfriend. She falls straight into his lap. Just like that. Like a trophy on his arm. UGGGHHHH Varang deserves better writing
Unpopular opinion on Avatar Fire and Ash
It was nice to see Varang, super interesting character, maybe I expected her to be a bit more developed.
Surprisingly, the one that actually sold the film to me was Neytiri. Her immense grief, her unhinged fury, her bitter regret, her shame, it was so damn real, I felt it all, more than in any other previous film. I always admired her but she wasn't my favorite, and I realize that perhaps only now I have actually seen her for the first time and felt all of her pain at once.
I see you, Neytiri
