While conducting my investigation on pónos–aretē relationship I started thinking about the Greek class and their aretēs.

The thing about aretē it’s that —even in modern Greek —it’s badly translated as “virtue” when in reality it means excellence.

It really refers to the excellence at fulfilling one’s function and being the best version of what you are.

A knife’s aretē is sharpness.

A warrior’s aretē is courage and endurance.

A human’s aretē is realized through action under pressure.

So the thing about aretē is that it’s proven, not possessed. It only appears in testing conditions.

What drives the evens in the novel and thus brings the eventual downfall of the Greek class is their dissonance between their «είναι και φαίνεσθαι». And that gap between who they truly are and who they appear/perform is gone after Bunny’s death, and so under pressure do we see their true colours. In the second book it becomes more obvious that the aretēs they were performing were not the ones they had.

And of course you can draw your own conclusions but let me by insufferable and a nerd and bring up Aristotle.

It wasn’t danger and blackmail that brought a killer out of Henry just like it wasn’t nativity that built Richard’s tolerance to violence.
