Picking apart Instant Replay with a Dolenzmith Micky vs Mike writing lens:

Just A Game

There's a way There's a way for you and I If you'll just stay. If you'll just stay to keep me hidden from the day,

And all its light, That's covered up by night when you're away. When you're away the image of your face is clear, It is clear across the room and I am here,

Against the wall, afraid that it is all Just a game. Just a game that's played in fun But not too real.

Not too real to take a chance on finding out You've really lost. I can't see you clearly while I'm here. While I'm here and you are in my state of mind.

My state of mind is changing places all the time, And I am lost Trying to get across another time. When you're away the image of your face is clear,

It is clear across the room and I am here, Against the wall, afraid that it is all

Just a game Just a game Just a game.

While I Cry

They told me what you'd do If I ever stayed with you. They told me that you'd laugh While I cried.

They told me what you'd say That you'd turn and walk away And find another place to play, While I cried.

Now I think back on those times I didn't read between the lines. How all the things that you said Never seemed to match the things you did.

Thoughts keep turning round in my mind Now I see reason and rhyme. Time spent with you has brought me something And I've lost nothing If you are that kind.

They told me what you'd do If I ever stayed with you And sure enough, It all came true.

Just a Game

-Asking the partner to stay

-Reports having confused/contradictory thoughts

"My state of mind is changing places all the time"

-POV character says it's hard to figure out partner when partner shares a similar state of mind. Just a Game and While I Cry share similar turns of phrase regarding confused emotions: 'My state of mind is changing places all the time' in Just A Game vs 'Thoughts keep turning round in my mind' .

-Reminisces for past time together in a kind of melancholy way

-thinks partner is just playing 'a game' instead of being serious which POV character is upset about it.

While I Cry

-States they can't stay

-Criticizes the partner for having confused and contradictory thoughts, despite also having those confused/contradictory thoughts.

-Reminisces for past time together in a kind of melancholy way

-Thinks partner will find 'another place to play' while POV character is upset.

gotta be honest it's a hmmm choice that the songs micky wrote on instant replay are

  1. shorty blackwell, a song about mike being disinterested and wondering if he's happy
  2. just a game, a song about a hidden relationship being viable and that they COULD be happy if it stays hidden. and being afraid of being left behind and just screwing around instead of being real

also pretty hmmmmm that the mike written songs also have the 'play/game' kind of motif about being upset while the other person in the relationship seems happy....

i hate that every time i look for color studies and tips to improve my art and make it more dynamic and interesting all that comes up are rudimentary explanations of the color wheel that explain it to me like im in 1st grade and just now discovering my primary colors

“red and green are opposites 🥰” cool now how do i paint a tree with pinks and blues without it looking like a child’s finger painting or incongruous blobs of rainbow vomit

ok i can’t explain it very well but im looking for tips and techniques for rendering art like

with specifically the highlights and colors being hues that compliment each other, don’t distract from the scene, and make it more interesting/visually appealing

is it too much to ask

gonna drop some sources I have saved on Pinterest! I don't know if these all link back to the original sources so apologies for that

This one's more for palette building but I think it's useful and can be applied to the other ones

"Chromatic fringe" - I also see people using this with shading, they bring in a transition color that is a different hue than the base color or shadow, it makes it so that less vibrancy is lost and it doesn't get muddy!

This one specifically has a lot of process behind the style of painting you're looking for!

Also one of my favorite artists who makes bright and colorful art like this is Not Sorry Art on TikTok & YouTube, her website is here and it's<3 my fav. She has some videos where you can see her process

With the oranges painting you put as an example, I noticed they painted the lighter values more toward yellow - they also exaggerated the hues of the undertones of the photo, so I'm guessing they either did it in their head or bumped the saturation up to get a closer look! I really love these paintings you shared and I definitely share your desire to paint/draw like that :)

thanks this is super helpful! /gen

If you'd like 2 Print books that I absolutely reccomend to every visual artist regardless of Media, Color and Light and Imaginative Realism by James Gurney are basically religious texts for artists, even the 3-D people because his understanding and explanation of how light and form work is that damn good.

If you're wondering about Mr. Gurney's chops:

James Gurney is the Dinotopia Guy (that link includes his Dinotopia books, prints and online classes too)
