“I think a lot about queer villains, the problem and pleasure and audacity of them. I know I should have a very specific political response to them. I know, for example, I should be offended by Disney’s lineup of vain, effete, ne'er-do-wells (Scar, Jafar), sinister drag queens (Ursula, Cruella de Vil), and constipated, man-hating power dykes (Lady Tremaine, Maleficent). I should be furious at Downton Abbey’s scheming gay butler and Girlfriend’s controlling lunatic lesbian, and I should be indignant about Rebecca and Strangers on a Train and Laura and The Terror and All About Eve, and every other classic and contemporary foppish, conniving, sissy, cruel, humorless, depraved, evil, insane homosexual on the large and small screen. And yet, while I recognize the problem intellectually–the system of coding, the way villainy and queerness become a kind of shorthand for each other–I cannot help but love these fictional queer villains. I love them for all of their aesthetic lushness and theatrical glee, their fabulousness, their ruthlessness, their power. They’re always by far the most interesting characters on the screen. After all, they live in a world that hates them. They’ve adapted; they’ve learned to conceal themselves. They’ve survived.”

"It's beautiful, yes?" a woman's rich voice asked as a small plate was placed on the table at Neve's side. She turned to smile at Mara, who settled into the other seat. The older woman was dressed in what she thought of as Antivan Tevene style, with a colorful scarf wrapped around most of her gray hair and cascading over one shoulder, set nicely against a simple white shirt and flowing black skirt covered in intricate embroidery at the hems. Little to indicate that she owned this cafe, much less most of the city block. "It really is," Neve returned a smile, and swept her eyes over the crowd as it moved and flowed through the plaza, and then back. "Especially this year. I haven't been here for the Corona de Rialto for a while, but I don't remember it being this lively when I was younger." "This is a time to be alive," Mara reached out and plucked a cinnamon covered date from the table. "If not now, when would we dance? Our people live, the weather is good, and many have been recovered who were lost. Even our homeland blesses us today." "Oh?" Neve raised an eyebrow and took one of the dates for herself as Mara ate hers in silence for a moment. She had only known the woman for a few years, but had found out quickly that if you wanted anything in Little Antiva, starting with the owner of Cafe Solana was the only way to start. Or to end. "Surely Neve Gallus already knows," Mara gave Neve a wink and turned to wave down at someone in the crowd who called up from the street. "Some of us may have not been home in a very long time, but even I remember what it feels like when the Crows are in town."
