hmm maybe cam's attitude towards pal is a mirror of pal's attitude towards dulcie. in both sets of relationships, the person on the inferior end of the power imbalance (necrocav dynamic, age difference) is very willing to give themself over to their superior and shapes their whole youth around being of best service to them, camilla by going ham to become an excellent cavalier and palamedes by pursuing medical science and becoming the heir to his house, in both cases it seems like it's the superior who has to hit the brakes before things go to far, and then the inferiors literally blow themselves up for the sake of the superiors, anyway. and both cam and pal have been told that their outlooks aren't healthy and they both appear to have responded "sure, but I'm built different."
