I think it's fine to be off-put by the new art-style for Royal Magic and have critiques for it. However, a lot of the takes I've seen around it (largely on Twitter and Reddit) are straight up ass so I'm just gonna tap a few signs.
- It was confirmed by Craig Gerber that Royal Magic would have a different animation style than the original, due to both having different animators and the tech being different than it was 8 years ago when the OG series ended. Again, that doesn't negate it from criticism, but I think by now, everyone should've known that it would've looked different.
2. It was confirmed that Sofia wasn't going to age in this, once again, by the creator. It'll pick up 3 months after the ending of the original series. The reason Sofia's not a teenager is most likely because it's a kids' show so keeping her young would help continue to connect with and empower the young audience with a relatable main character.
3. An explanation, not a defusion of criticism, but it being for kids could explain why it looks the way it does. Bouncy proportions, bright colors, big faces, it's something that is designed for a young Disney Jr. demographic. We can discuss all day long whether or not it works, but let's remember that little detail in said discussions because it is important.
4. "It looks like AI-" shut up, shut up, shut the actual fuck up. Real people wrote, drew, storyboarded, and animated this series, putting 4 years of work and counting into this series, under the direction of someone who is admantly [and rightfully] against the usage of AI in the art industry. I don't care how ugly or generic you think it is, calling an unreleased preschool series "AI" because the art-style is different from what you expected is just gross. Miss me with that bullshit y'all.
