When I worked at Target, it was during the winter, and this guy comes up to my register with a neutral-colored beanie with a fake fur pompom on top. All embarrassed and cringing, asking me if it was a woman’s hat and if it would be weird for him to get it.

I was like, “It’s just a hat. If you like it and you wear it, it’s not a woman’s hat, it’s just your hat. You don’t need to follow what the tag says if you don’t want to.” And it was like I gave him some kind of awe-inspiring wisdom he’d never considered, and he left with that hat on his head.

More cishets need to hear and internalize this message because so many of them are avoiding things that would make them happy just because of it having a label on it for whatever gender.

My favorite thing about this topic as an African is when people ask me where I’m from and I say I’m from Cape Verde (then I usually have to explain that it’s an archipelago near the Senegalese coasts) and then they answer with something along the lines of "omg my cousin did a road trip in Kenya!" And I just have to stand there are try to explain to them that the distance between CV and Kenya is around the distance between the USA and Bolivia or Pakistan and f#%! France. Westerners just know nothing about African geography and/or cultures and it often leads to awkward or racist situations.

Let’s remember Marimar Martinez who survived after being shot at by ICE five times, but then had to fight against felony charges that were based on claims that differed from video evidence. transandrophobia and misandry are not real phenomena and are terms made up due to a misunderstanding of why certain people experience bigotry.

being a man is not why you are targeted by bigotry. you can experience it differently because you are a man but being a man is not what is being scrutinized, it is being trans, being gay, being a person of color, being disabled- societal expectations around manhood can affect/intersect with peoples' perception of your struggles/identity but manhood is not what is being scrutinized.

being a man, you still have a level of privilege over people experiencing the bigotry you do who are not men. and there are also times where you are not experiencing bigotry towards your manhood because you aren't seen as a man at all by certain people.

the reason manhood can affect your treatment but is not the subject of bigotry is because it all comes down to a lack of conformity to societal ideals. it also is really just more misogyny. society hates women. transphobes and homophobes hate women. you can be affected by misogynistic ideals as a man, especially as a queer man. saying this will not make you less of a man. this also does not mean you can claim womens' issues as your own

also, transandrophobia and misandry are a case of taking womens' issues and making it about men when they really do not experience these problems in a remotely similar manner.

btw not all affectionate friendships are queerplatonic. platonic is not the same as queerplatonic. you can have a good friendship with someone and even cuddle and kiss and get married and have a child together and it can still be platonic (as in neither queerplatonic nor romantic). let people love deeply without requiring them to make it about partnership
