Bergamo, Italy 🇮🇹

Bergamo is a historic city in northern Italy, known for its well-preserved medieval character. Its history dates back to ancient times, when it was first settled by Celtic tribes and later became an important Roman town. During the Middle Ages, Bergamo developed strong defensive walls and flourished as a center of trade and culture. In the 15th century, the city came under the rule of the Republic of Venice, which left a lasting mark on its architecture, including the famous Venetian walls that are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Drachenburg Castle, Germany 🇩🇪

Drachenburg Castle was built between 1882 and 1884 by Baron Stephan von Sartert, a wealthy stockbroker. Although it looks medieval, it is actually a 19th-century palace combining Neo-Gothic and Neo-Renaissance styles. The castle was never used as a defensive fortress; it was designed as a luxurious residence overlooking the Rhine River. Today, it is a popular tourist attraction and an important example of German historicism architecture.

🇩🇪 Hartenfels Castle, Germany 🇩🇪

Hartenfels Castle is a historic Renaissance castle located in Torgau, Germany. It was built in the 15th and 16th centuries and served as an important residence of the Saxon electors. The castle is especially known for its role in the Protestant Reformation, as Martin Luther consecrated its chapel in 1544.

Corvin Castle, also known as Hunedoara Castle, is one of the largest and most impressive Gothic castles in Europe. It was built in the 15th century by John Hunyadi, a Hungarian military leader and governor of the Kingdom of Hungary. The castle is famous for its dramatic towers, drawbridge, and Gothic–Renaissance architecture.

Throughout history, Corvin Castle served as a military fortress, a noble residence, and a symbol of power. Legends say that Vlad the Impaler (often linked to Dracula) was once imprisoned here, adding to its mysterious reputation. Today, Corvin Castle stands as an important historical monument and a popular tourist attraction, reflecting the medieval history of Transylvania

Bonaguil Castle, France 🇫🇷

Bonaguil Castle is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in France. Its construction began in the 13th century, but it reached its most impressive form in the late 15th century under Baron Bérenger de Roquefeuil.

The castle is famous for its advanced military architecture, including thick walls, towers, drawbridges, and defensive systems designed to resist artillery attacks. Interestingly, Bonaguil was already considered militarily outdated shortly after its completion due to the rapid evolution of cannons.

Unlike many castles, Bonaguil never experienced major battles. It was abandoned in the 18th century, later restored, and today it stands as a remarkable example of medieval fortress design and is open to visitors.
