I am Rax! | xe/xem/xyr or they/them/their | art, photography, and writing sometimes | reblogs from @secretlyawizard

here's my feastfone25 piece on its own. the art that came out of this game was amazing and I was surrounded by artists I really look up to, so I felt quite humbled at the reveal time!

I strongly recommend looking at the pieces in the game on THE WEBSITE, where they will not be compressed to death!!

This is Bleidd’s younger half-sister, Eleri. There’s ten years between the siblings and she looked up to Bleidd a lot, literally as well as figuratively. The two of them spent hours playing together in the family horse pastures, mostly at being magical animals, often from a book one or both had read. This was another shared hobby, though Eleri had much less interest in non-fiction than their older sibling and Bleidd was mostly unimpressed by Eleri’s dearest genre - school stories. Tales from years gone by of slap-up midnight feasts and jolly pranks, more modern “secret diary of a highschooler”-type fare, fantasy genre combinations like a school for witches, or knights, or even talking cats…

(you may have seen these before on my sketch blog)

a few years ago, I did the first set of little environment thumbnails (first pic). they're all supposed to be loosely set in Ynysoedd y Ddraig/The Dragon Isles. I picked the three I liked best (red dot)

then last year, I began expanding each of those into eight variations. this stone window was first, going for a kind of artificial/natural duality theme (second pic). of these, I plan to pick three (or maybe five, if I'm indecisive) to turn into "full" value sketches. I'm well into the first of those (number 1 on the page) now, so I guess I can post this step without feeling like I'm always promising stuff that never comes. some of these have partial photo ref, but some don't, which is always jolly when it comes to detail time!

a server I recently joined is doing a colour-my-lines type game, and I have always wanted to colour this one of @eisly's linearts (and design) since the moment I first saw it, so I did. I think because it wasn't my design, it was easier to just go for it rather than doing colour studies etc. and it was a lot of fun, though slow because body hurty. it's such a good design, I LOVE the way the scissors attach to the head especially. I imagine it lost its leg in a fight with another scissorbird...

it's kind of hard to find out what (and who) the story I'm writing (tentatively titled The Ballad Of Morgan Howell) is about when the information is scattered across three or four sites and my brain, isn't it? suffer no longer: here are head shots of six of the main characters (there are at least three more but they're secret >;3) and below is a (mildly spoilery) summary of the first half of the story! if you like it please do tell me, it honestly gives me so much strength to write more!!

Myfanwy and Morgan are non-identical twins. They grew up in a lighthouse on a very small island, Ynys Goleudy, with a population of less than twenty-five people - including their close friends, siblings Osian and Bron. When they were teens their neglectful and uninvolved parents won the lottery and bought a yacht, which they decided to tour the morgwin lands on - without the twins. They went further and further away and got harder and harder to contact. The twins went to university in one of the country's main university towns, supported by the money that their parents had left for them, but Morgan's harp mentor’s death caused him to plunge into depression and he went home. Living alone in the empty residential part of the lighthouse, he took night swims a lot and one night he just…didn't come back. Everyone assumed he drowned, either on purpose or by accident. Myfanwy is heartbroken.

After stumbling through her year-end exams she returns to the island to stay with Osian and Bron's family and mourn. She seems to be suffering from brain fog and often appears confused and forgetful, but everyone puts it down to grief. In the autumn she returns to university (living in a new apartment in order to avoid Morgan's friends) and takes to wearing mourning clothes, both as a mark that she has not forgotten Morgan and to keep people at arms length. The only people she really talks to are Bleidd, a marine biology student with their own tragic past, and Neha, a member of a different and more long-lived sapient species, whom Myfanwy met online. Myfanwy's confusion advances into small acts of magic and she realises she is becoming a Witch. She can't tell anyone because if the authorities find out, they will force her to either undergo a surgery that destroys the magic but causes brain damage, or go into exile until her own powers inevitably kill her. She tries to continue her life as normal but her magical madness becomes more troublesome as she keeps finding confusing scribbles and notes around her flat, on bedsheets and walls - in her own handwriting, but reading more like Morgan's notes when he was alive.

I did the first version of this picture as a ref for art fight last year. I don't think I'm well enough to participate this year sadly, but I fixed her screwed up eyes and overly long neck.

maybe I'll be able to do an art trade or two outside of art fight? if you are a mutual and would like to art trade, let me know!

(zoomed version under the cut)

A trainee wizard with a good heart, Wynstan always works hard and does his best. He is afraid of open water after a traumatic experience in his early childhood so he sticks to the shoreline, investigating rock pools and collecting shells. He is often accompanied by his familiar, Bukkit, who is...a bucket.

Wynstan attends a school for magic users (usually called just The Place Of Knowledge in english), where he studies the heavens, magical texts, and the ecology of the strand. More like a university than a school, The Place can be entered through any door as long as one has the right key and the right attitude. Its component rooms and spaces are scattered spacially but linked with magic, and can be like basically anything - a cave behind a waterfall, a magical bazaar, a bubble of air on the moon...
