At the risk of calling down a total s***storm on my blog, I have to add that FMA's consistent adherence to the theme of "human life is sacred" is absolutely the thing that makes it so good. People praise its gut-wrenching depiction of the horrors of war and the abuse of power, but the only reason those things hit so hard is because both the '03 series and Brotherhood take the time to hammer home that every individual human soul is infinitely precious and utterly irreplaceable. Edward and Alphonse's bodies are broken/outright missing altogether because they thought their mother's soul was something that could be bought with alchemy. They were acting out of love and childish naivete, yet the consequences were no less brutal for it. Because of this, Ed and Al go through the entire series refusing to take a life when it's in their power to avoid it, no matter how insignificant or even despicable the character is. Alphonse stops Edward from killing Shou Tucker during a fit of more-than-justifiable rage and horror (if you know, you know). Edward refuses to euthanize two criminal souls bound to broken suits of armor, even after they'd just tried to kill him. Nothing, not physical appearance, age, health, or lived experience, affects the value of a human soul in the FMA universe. That's why the genocide of the Ishvalans is so horrifying. That's why the use of human souls as ingredients for a Philosopher's Stone is so unforgivable. You can disagree with the idea or have whatever stance you want in real life, but within the context of the FMA universe, an unborn child's soul would be just as precious as that of Ed and Al's own mother. And it is exactly that kind of hard, unyielding consistency that makes the series so thematically powerful.
