Everyone misunderstands what makes Nate so scary. What makes Nate scary is not that he might snap and kill someone. What makes Nate scary is that if he wants you to die, you will die, and you will do it to yourself. You will walk onto the platform and put your head into the noose and pull the lever, and you could turn around and stop at any time but you won't, because he's calculated everything and he knows exactly what will make you want to do all of that. He'll never pull the trigger because he'll never need to.
I like to think that Parker starts the new year with a little awards ceremony for the crew
- Best Usage of Vents
- Most Seamless Theft
- Quietest Break-In
- Fastest Rappel
(All of the categories are rigged and she takes home all of the trophies she made and proudly displays them somewhere that is specifically annoying to Hardison)
What if you were a foster kid and you finally had a parent who seemed to love you but that didn't take away the fear of being abandoned. What if you figured out you had a talent for something, a real talent, and the first thing you did as soon as you thought you were capable of it was to steal enough money to cover that parent's debts and medical bills, because you know that she loves you just for you but also if you are useful, you will be allowed to stay. What if you work with a crew for the very first time and immediately latch on so tightly to these people who are not even very nice to you yet, not really, that you buy them an office and pull several all-nighters installing fancy screens and making some ridiculous painting of your new boss as an old man and constructing new state-of-the-art thievery toys for them to play with, and they keep saying one more job, maybe two, and if you keep being better and better and more useful and solving problems, maybe they will never stop saying one more job. Maybe they won't leave you.
Im such a slut for traumatized teenage found family stories. Like yes, we're too young to do this, yes we should be turning to parents, but they can't fix this. The power is in our hands, and goddamnit if you'll be alone for the journey. These are kids who know each other SO well because they HAVE to, just to be safe, but also because they love each other. Like yes, I know exactly when you need help in a fight and also I know you like your fries with extra salt. Don't even get me started on the fan works where they're just being regular teenagers for once UGH I can't stand it /pos
Things you can do to help try to save Leverage.
1. Sign the Petition.
1600 signatures and counting! Dean Devlin has said he's looking for a new home for our show. Let's give him some evidence to show that it comes with a very distinctive fanbase!
2. Make some noise.
Sign, share on all the socials, use the hashtags "SaveLeverageRedemption" and "LetsGoStealASeason4" and watch, watch, watch! Get the numbers up, and don't forget to rate the show. It all helps make it look like a good investment.
3. Post a pretzel on Friday 9 January
If you are on X, Blue-sky, Threads etc then please post a picture of a pretzel on Friday 9th January as close to 8pm EST as possible (7pm EST, 6pm MST, 5pm PST, 4pm AST, 1am on Sat 10th GMT). I love this idea. Please share the hell out of it!
If you'd be up for a coordinated mass watch of an episode, please comment where you are (time zone) and what episode. I'm thinking "The Too Many Rembrandts Job" at a time most people can put it on.
I love how Parker's black and white morality is just not at all influenced by the law or "normal" morality. Stealing things? Sexy and cool and chill. These rich assholes aren't hurt by it, so it's fine. Using the law against people, scamming Nannas, exploting children, and generally being an asshole, however? Scum of the earth. Deserve to have the rest of their life ruined, no matter how "legal" their activities are. She can hurt them as much as she wants, and feels entirely justified in it. It pleases me greatly. So often when you have a character like that, with such black and white views, it's all "stealing is wrong" and "lying is bad" and "don't do anything wrong ever, follow all the rules without question", entirely dictated by a sense of lawfullness. But Parker is not like that. She's special. Her black and white thinking is run by a system of her own motivations and beliefs, unnuanced but utterly hers, and I love her for it.
I'm sorry they're just delightful
I think about the opening line of leverage a lot
It starts in an airport bar with the bartender telling Nate that the flight starts boarding in 15 minutes.
And then Victor Dubenich arrives
But it never gets mentioned again where Nate was going, and we don’t know of anyone he cares about that he would have to fly to get to. There’s nothing to pull him anywhere, which means that he’s leaving just to go. And look. Nate at the start of this show is so angry, and so helpless, and so alone. He’s just lost his kid and divorced his wife, he’s drunk half to death. He’s is not doing well.
So I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure that if Victor Dubenich had arrived 15 minutes late, Nate would’ve gotten on that plane, flown to god knows where, and, by the time someone came looking for him, there probably wouldn’t be anyone to find.
