Motleys the Only Wear

(I used to use archival tags, but that was taking too long. Reblogging recklessly is more fun, which is generally what I'm here for)

So we already know that this

Didn't pan out the way we expected it too. And I've been thinking about the narrative reasons we haven't guessed yet for why Tarvek was included in the trip. It may be that getting him this chance he didn't end up needing was really about getting everyone else up here, but something else occurred to me...

What if Tarvek isn't here to free the Baron but to disinfect the dingbots? or at least learn something critical about how Lu is writing herself into clanks that will allow them to disrupt the way she's writing herself into other brains, like Olga's corpse.

there is a certain something to writing fanfiction on your phone in a hotel room because you didn't bring a computer that just connects you, spiritually, with your 14 year old self. and the rest of the human race. mankind's need to create is stronger than anything else. I would write with pen and paper if I had to. and I have. sometimes you just need to write and it doesn't matter where the hell you are or if it makes your thumbs hurt from doing it. 14 year old girls on ao3 are akin to the likes of ancient scribes and shakespeare.

When I worked retail, our receipt printers would require a new roll of paper when there was still a good 12-18" of paper left. I would scavenge these and note down story ideas between tasks.

The need to create is more strong than reasonable, and more present than we realize.

"Rings" by ND Stevenson

My absolute favourite comic journal by Stevenson. Made me cry my eyes out. Even when I can't articulate it, it gets to the core of what I think love is.

I think it's important to remember that every single religion can be twisted for violence and oppression and abuse and control. Yes, including the one that you think can't be. But quickly, before anti-theists start saying that religion is an inherently evil violence accelerant, remember that this is true for any ideology, including anti-theism. Violence and oppression and abuse and control happens wherever there are people who think that those things will help them get what they want.

Every time I read an empirical study on the actual performance of "agentic" AI, I can't help but think of that one experiment where they tried to get an AI to design a robot that can walk, but it never did because it figured out that just building a really tall robot that immediately falls over is a much cheaper way to maximise distance travelled.

Sometimes it feels like the entire business model for LLMs is built on convincing people that a really tall robot that immediately falls over is in fact the optimal solution to that problem.

[image description: an excerpt of text that says:

“It’s funny,” I told Flewin. “We have an old Nintendo Game Boy floating around the house, and Tetris is the only game we own. My wife will sometimes dig it out to play on airplanes and long car rides. She’s weirdly good at it. She can get 500 or 600 lines, no problem.”

What Flewin said next I will never forget.

“Oh, my!”

/end id]

TL;DR on the article

The husband was writing an article on classic video game records, was surprised to find out that holding the Tetris record is a bit of a big deal, and mentions how good his wife is at it.

The guy he’s talking to mentions that the record is 327, way lower than his wifes usual scores of 500-600.

They travel to a tournament, and she goes to do her attempt. Just after she beats 327, and is climbing higher, a judge brings up to the husband that the specific version she’s playing actually has a different record of 545.

She overhears that she needs to beat 500-something, and keeps going, setting the record at 841.

which, they later find out, is her second-best record

There was a decent but ultimately forgettable fantasy novel I read a long time ago that had a single moment that stuck with me.

The protagonist has just won the world famous sword fighting competition in the big, rich capital and is talking to his mentor, and says something about being the best swordsman in the world. The mentor frowns and tells him that no, he isn't. He is the best swordsman out of the people that could afford to show up to this tournament. There could be a mercenary way out in the mountains, patrolling a snow encrusted fort's walls that could kick his ass and there was no way to know until he was already losing to the guy.

I think about that a lot, and how for every apparently dominant competitor, there might be a fucking ronin out there somewhere capable of destroying them.

Always reblog tetris ronin lady

Also, consider. A magical version of the bends. Whenever someone from a non- or low-magical land has to go into a very magic rich forest or land or dimension, having to take breaks to let their bodies adjust to the new magic exposure or else their blood will boil in their veins or they'll Transform

actually the bends only kicks in when you try to LEAVE the high pressure area. or in this case, magic rich area?

Getting deeper and deeper into feywilds and knowing that however deep you get, it’s gonna take twice as long to escape without magic tearing its way out of you

“A child/student/young person asked me how to do X why does nobody get taught anything these days!!!” It’s you, buddy, you’re the teaching, this may legitimately never have come up before, why do people think education is exclusively some kind of abstract preemptive measure, most importantly done by other people so the rest of us only get the benefits and don’t have to do the work. Sometimes the person who is going to teach this is you. Fucking step up

Inspired by a recent conversation on the Jane Austen server about how everyone at Lyme notices that Anne is hot. Meanwhile, we readers knew it from the very beginning. It's about time you opened your eyes, Freddy!

Born with Courage, Wisdom comes with Time. 🕑🛡️🗡️

I love Time a lot. I've been low key hyped to draw him since I love the lore of Majora and OOT.

He is I think my favorite version of a "Hero." Someone who is so kind, it's tragic. Someone so caring, it hurts. Because you watch them crack over an over. Only to find the strength to keep going for the sake of others.

I'm glad this Time is finding it in himself to be selfish. Even if it's hard for him. He deserves to take a deep breath.
