One stitch at a time

@yayxstitch

A spot for all things needlework from someone whose done it for decades. I favor blackwork/cross stitch. I'm Miranda.

If you have a shop/sell patterns somewhere send me an ask/submit, tag me, comment here, or notify me and I'll do a post for you. The more patterns for me to buy the better.

Starting 2026 with some repetitive cross stich froggies. Really needed some comforting work while it's too hot to knit in summer, so came up with these cute frog patterns based on the designs from my needle books.

Came upon the set of frames in an opshop, so I thought they're meant to be ✌️🐸🐸✌️(even though I've planned something more elaborate initially).

The initial straw hat frog was a bit short for the 10x15 frame, so I've revised it to fit the exact size - the pattern is for to the new size (also, changed the colour of the frame around it - feel, like green will work better).

I've had some dye kicking around, so I've dyed the aida canvasses with what I had, so obviously, the colour combo is to fit just that.

Feel free to use the patterns to embroider your own, if you like this kind of jam.

Enjoy!

Something I like to make using left over embroidery floss. Sometimes you have a little thread or a lot. Makes for a fun multicolored picture. I would like to try this somehow making a pigeon.

On felt using two strands.

Back to what helps make me happy and I'm going to learn/attempt new stuff with this piece. Up first will be the whipped backstitch. First tentacle is sufficiently wiggly.

Whipped backstitch with the same color gives a good raised effect. I'm proud of myself.

OKAY 👏 let's stitch this dragon

fucking knew i would run out of green thread at the most aggravating point. fortunately i was smart enough to use a DMC thread for that color, instead of one of my many off-brand skeins of unknown origins, because i knew i might need to buy more & would have to exactly match the color.

...the second skein of 562 i have is not the same color as the first skein of 562, & neither one matches the sample of 562 in my DMC stitcher's guide (the fancy one with the actual threads in it that they don't sell anymore & goes for like $50, found it at a yard sale), so that's gonna be fun. if i go out & buy another, i wonder which one it'll match? or will it be a whole new color?

Something I've been quietly stitching in the evenings: these zokin - cloths for cleaning, made from old tea towels.

When I was with family over Christmas, my MIL mentioned offhandedly that she really should throw out all her old threadbare tea towels, but that she couldn't quite make herself do it. I asked for them, explained the whole zokin concept and she gave me a small pile of lovely old linen tea towels. I've been using my old cotton towels as the middle layer to make them more squooshy and absorbent. I aim to make a heap of them so I can gift some back in their new form.

Not pictured: the first one I made, which is already in service in the kitchen as a cloth for our teapot to sit on.

They are a lovely quiet evening stitch project. They felt a bit 'ugly' to share, but I'm enjoying them more and more, so here they are.

I recommend The Green Wrapper on youtube if you'd like to make zokin from your old cloths.

My treacherous eye, finished by me in 2026. Warp is cotton seine twine, weft is wool. Measures 23” x 21.5”.

This is woven from a reference photo of my right eye, which is, for both complicated and very straightforward reasons (eye don’t work good), frequently hidden under an eyepatch. I wove a large tapestry hoping that the time taken to hand weave it would be time I could use to digest the reality of my eye (eye don’t work good). I do not think that worked—but I did start to enjoy the grossness of it a bit as I wove the inside lid.

I’m going to enter this in some calls for art if I find the right one, maybe I will get to show it off in person someday.

As 2025 has come to an end, my book snake has too. I really enjoyed this project, and I'm very proud of the result! Every band is a book I read in 2025, the color indicates the (main) genre.

Blåhaj for scale, the snake is about 1.65m long. It is really funny to see April/May, when I read the entire Dutch literature award shortlist (greyish blue) and Sep/Oct, when I read all the Russian children's books that the library had to offer (pale blue).

This year, my book tracking project is going to be a sweater. It's a bit more tricky, since I don't know exactly how many books I will read in advance, so maybe it'll be way too short or maybe it will have a hood. We'll see, but I look forward to it, at least! Each book will be a patch with the number of stitches corresponding to the number of pages (divided by 5), the number of rows representing my review (out of 10), the color indicating the year that the book entered my TBR, and the stitch type signifying the format (print, audio, digital).

Mmmmmmm TEXTURES are happening on the loom tonight!!

The fun thing about waffle weave is that it shrinks a ridiculous amount.

As I planned it out I was like, surely, these towels are completely oversized… The washed one is so thick and squishy though, and still appropriately sized for its purpose.

Juicy!
