“Now,” Cordelia told the young dragon before her. “When she shows up, make sure that she feels like the most special dragon in Sornieth. Get up, take her coat if she brings one, help her sit down–OH! And remember to check the ambiance before. The lighting needs to be perfect, so you can see them sparkling in her eyes, and she yours…” Cordelia sighed dramatically, “It will be so romantic.” The young dragon nodded nervously, and started saying, “But Cord–” “Don’t worry!” she exclaimed. “You look handsome, and you know she already loves you. The only things you have to worry about is that you act like yourself. She is your princess, more precious than any jewel. Treat her that way. Maybe you could go stargazing after dinner?” The dragon smiled, obviously trying to get past his nerves. “Cordelia…” he said. “Thank you. Thank you so much. You introducing us has been one of the best things that’s ever happened to me.” Then he left, an excited pep in his step.

As she watched him go, the smile on Cordelia’s face slowly faded, and she felt a deep ache in her chest.

Yes, he’d found his true love, but hers? Where was he? No one seemed to want her, and she couldn’t find out why. “I do everything right,” she thought. “So… why does nobody love me? Why am I all alone?” And it hurt. It hurt too much for her. She didn’t have anyone she felt she could tell, either, so she retreated to her den and wept. When she reemerged, her beaming smile was back, and no one ever knew the pain she was suffering.
