Cartographers are not, as their name implies, actually cartographers, although many become so. They are surprisingly intelligent for living objects, capable of individual thought and speech. They have an instinctual knowledge of the areas in the maps that make up their bodies, and can learn new areas. Some even go on to become mapmakers themselves, although they are unable to bring their own creations to life.

Cartographers are able to produce limited magic; most of their magic goes towards sustaining their bodies, but some are able produce magic of their own element. They are usually of the Light element, but Cartographers of every element have been known to exist, based on the area contained in their map.

Cartographers are able to breed, due to the magic from which they are made. They often, but not always, produce more living maps, whose magic is inherited by the parent. These hatchlings are more fragile than the originals, and cannot withstand harsh elements.
