Biography
I don't believe in limitations. If it can happen to an Imperial, it can happen to any dragon, and I'm going to figure it out. If it kills me.

Kore the Grave Robber Cleverness | Methodology | Dedication The spiral was flanked by two coatls, and all three of them moved strangely. The spiral felt at the ground before nem as though ne wasn't certain of where to put nir limbs, and the coatls jerked on every step as though animated by puppets. You weren't sure why they were at your clan's burial grounds, but they made you nervous. "Here, is this good, Kore?" one of the coatls asked, her pale plumage fluffing slightly. "Looks about right," the spiral said, and sat back as the other coatl unwrapped a lumpy bag from his shoulders, revealing- a spade. Oh, no. No, you couldn't allow this.
Kore grew up seeming perfectly
normal, or as normal as a hatchling in such a fraught region of the Ashfall Wastes as there could possibly be, really. Ne had a focus on stories, especially scary stories, that made nem seem a primed candidate for clan storyteller, or some kind of scribe. But instead, when ne became old enough to pick a profession, he immediately went into the sciences, with a near-frenetic obsession with biology. This raised no red flags; instead it was good that a dragon with such singleminded focus would devote nemself to keeping other dragons healed and safe. Ne became withdrawn, often not leaving their workshop for hours at a time or only at odd hours.
No, the first true red flag was
the zombies.
At some point, Kore had found
a book of early research on the phenomenon of Emperors, and he had become obsessed with understanding why it happened, and why it only happened to Imperials. After all, they weren't anything so special, were they? They were just... huge, and full of magic. Kore found and tested theory after theory after theory, until finally something stuck. It did not go as well as he'd hoped.
The pulsars and pumps stopped moving as Kore flipped the switch off, watching the small partially-decomposed heart slowly begin to beat. Ne quickly went to patch the rib cage back together, replacing the sternum and carefully stapling it into place. The stapler was set to the side. The no-longer-dead coatl, barely a hatchling, opened its one remaining green eye to stare at him blankly. There was no recognition in its eyes. Kore wondered if it was capable of thought- was it simply confused?- or if it was truly as empty-minded and evil as ne'd heard that Emperors theoretically were. Maybe there was a taint of the Shade forcing them towards evil, and because this laboratory was carefully kept clean and secure, with no place for the Shade to get a foothold, there would be no unpredictable destruction-- The coatl lurched off the table and swiped directly at Kore's eyes, snarling without words. Its body may have been mostly decomposed, but its claws were perfectly intact, and they cut deeply. Kore yelped, curling in on nemself. Ne heard the door open, and then screaming from the rest of the lair. Right. Right, he'd need restraints. And to declaw the next body he worked on. And... probably some serious healing. But this was a success! Ne pulled himself up onto his desk laboriously and went to wipe the blood out of nir eyes, but ne couldn't see any better after. That was alarming. They didn't feel that badly injured? Ne tried to blink, ignoring the momentary burst of pain that it brought with it, but nir vision didn't clear any more, instead simply shifting. Faintly, lights and darks shifted into focus, but nothing more clear. Fine. It would have to do. Ne reached for nir lab notebook and scribbled down on the paper, hopefully not over any clearer writing, "Success," and then shut the book and reached out one hand for the wall. Hopefully ne'd make it to the healer's cave without difficulty. Ne would complete nir research. Even if it killed nem. And everyone in nir clan along with nem. |
