The Beginning
|
___Makhai is born in the heart of the Plaguelands and he is no one and nothing at all. He is another hungry child aimless in a boneyard. He grows up with siblings who learn their viciousness early, a revered thing in a place that celebrates bloodshed over blood relations. They corner him one dark night, it is raining real water and not gritty debris, and the ground is slippery by the cliffside. He doesn’t mean to, but it happens all the same, he kills them both and he can’t tell the blood from the mud, the tears from the rain, the shaking from the cold. Makhai leaves and by the time the green haze of the sun filters onto the desert, he is someone, he is a survivor.
___The next few years has Makhai in and out of underground coliseums, paying his way in bodies and fleeting glory. He learns the language of violence better than anyone else and they call him berserker, they say he is unkillable. He is not another face down in the dirt but he can’t help but see his reflection in all the people he slays. He goes down, but not gone, in a fight one day - he wakes up blurry-eyed and heart-stuttering under the gentle hands of a pale, blind healer. | __ |
Cold Hearted
|
___Demetri is soft-spoken and unendingly caring. There is no creature not worth saving and no kindness not worth paying. They run away together and for the first time Makhai thinks maybe he is worth being saved too. Their new home is icy and desolate but their love is tender and warm. Demetri shows Makhai how to mend clothes and Makhai shows him how light fires.
___The leaves of autumn eventually make way for the frost of winter. The Icefield’s desperate come crawling out of the snowstorms and danger comes as thick as blizzards, as treacherous as the mountainside. The pair are ambushed, they must look like easy pickings for the band of thieves, but Makhai has faced worse. One of them makes a lunge for Demetri, his eye coverings fall to the ground, and the thief follows fast after Makhai’s blade slices through them. ___Makhai goes to Demetri, shivering but safe, and he sees the healer’s eyes for the first time ever. Green. Green like sage, like an open summer field, the green of someone Natureborn. Makhai is angry. He is angry at Demetri’s deception, at Plaguebringer for her cursed blessings, at Gladekeeper for sending him a snake he mistook for a rabbit. They are screaming at each other, Demetri is grabbing at his arms, stay with me. Makhai strikes him. ___The sound of snowfall is silent and not even the Gods have anything to say. | __ |
The Plaguelands
|
___With nowhere to go Makhai goes back to the only place he knows. To bloody daggers and bruised limbs, to being perpetually sore and aching in more than just his muscles. He scrapes his knuckles raw and fights until his legs go numb, but none of that does anything for the feeling in his chest, bleeding and devastating.
___He doesn’t know how long he goes on like this. Battle after battle, broken blades and broken bones. Until there is a man one day, who asks to see him, and when Makhai looks back to this moment, he thinks it is with regret. ___Mikha’el is the high priest of a Plaguedom citadel. He is a guardian of its way of life and a guardian in his blood. He had woken up from a fever dream in his tower sanctum, visions of a man with sharp teeth and sharp eyes burning through his mind. He is pulled body and soul across the Plaguelands until he finds this man. Until he finds his charge. ___When Mikha’el sees him for the first time electricity fires from all of his nerves, every atom in him shifts, and there is no power in any of the realms or from the Gods that would ever stop him from keeping his charge safe. He takes Makhai home. ___For a long time Mikha’el was not sure if he even had a charge, he thought perhaps his calling to Plaguedom was what he was meant to do. He had spent meticulous years studying ancient history, learning the deep magic, amassing power. Makhai’s presence does not go unnoticed by Mikha’el’s political rivals and his gifts as a fighter attracts the attention of the citadel’s denizens. ___Years go by, Makhai is safer than he has ever been despite the attempted assassinations and the rising tension in the royal court. He doesn’t know if he would call he and Mikha’el lovers necessarily, he supposes there is no difference, if Mikha’el’s soul belongs to him and he spends his nights in the other man’s bed. He looks into Mikha’el’s deep red eyes and feels settled, just not quite at home. ___Eventually, things begin to destabilise and a royal murder threatens to launch the area into a civil war. Mikha’el’s solution to keeping Makhai from harm is to put him on the throne. By his own will or that of the Gods, it happens but some things in history already belong to the fates. The civil war comes anyway and now Makhai is bleeding out into the dirt, into Mikha’el’s hands. He thinks distantly that dying isn’t so bad, he’s glad he doesn’t have to get back up with a sword in hand anymore. ___I’ll always protect you, Mikha’el says, and then Makhai dies. | __ |
The After
|
___Turns out dying is harder than Makhai thought it would be. When he comes to, there is nothing around him. No city, no people, no Mikha’el. He is in the centre of a crater in a familiar wasteland. He staggers to his feet and almost passes out, he is thirsty like he has never been before in his life. Not knowing what else to do, he starts walking. He doesn’t really remember the first set of people he comes across, only that one moment he is stumbling through sand and the next he is covered in blood. There are bodies and bodies but it’s obvious he’s alone again.
___He dreams rarely and when he does it’s of a dead priest from a place that no longer exists. He only knows the starving, the wanting so bad that it makes him sick. He tries dying again but this time he really can’t be killed. | __ |
